Native VSTi reverbs

So here's something I've long pondered. Whilst flicking through synth sounds for a track, I might stumble on a good one, which I will tend to edit some, but as soon as I turn off the synths verb, in order to comply with the 'only use one or two main verbs per track' rule, that sound often then goes limp even when sent to my nice dedicated reverb effect.

So then I do a mental tap dance;

"just use the vsti's own verb - if it sounds right it is right"

"you can't do that, everyone knows that will make for a muddy mix, use one main dedicated verb and send the synths to it"

"but I just did that and it sounds flatter, even though the verb is v nice and suits the other sounds in the track"

Sooo, for a MAIN synth part do you always turn of it's verb assuming you have a dedicate verb strip to send to?

One consideration is that if a synth preset is using it's own built in reverb, the programmer probably tweaked the reverb to suit that particular sound (I do anyway).

For a main lead part you could probably get away with using it's own reverb settings, or even tweak a reverb to suit it.

What I'll often do is insert a reverb on a particular sound and make it exactly the same as whatever sends i'm using and then just tweak the predelay and decay. As long as the room sizes are the same then it shouldn't sound too out of place.

Generally... If you really like how the synth interplays with it's native reverb, try setting up an instance of the synth as a send fx? just dial in the same settings, then remove it from the original instance. WOuld probably make for additional eargasms if you feed the correct things into it alongside the synth. I seem to remember doing something fairly similar in Predator at least with great success.
