**OK I solved this as I was writing the post, I think it helps to write out the problem and then it makes clues of the issue click together, in this case I had knocked the Advanced switch on the back of the Edirol devices - disabling its ASIO driver support DUH. I'll post anyway so others see this when googling and dont make the same mistake, god I've had this thing for years too**

Ok I've been beaten, I'm writing this post after re-installing windows and still have the same issue.

I dont know what has caused it, all I can think of is that it happened after I plugged in my TV via the HDMI port which installs some virtual audio devices but I have done this previously without this problem and now windows is re-installed and I havent yet plugged in the TV and have this issue.

Ableton no longer picks up the UA-25 External USB soundcard using the supplied ASIO Drivers (nor ASIO4ALL which I downloaded). It only plays sound when using the MME/DirectX drivers which are delayed and not very good.

So the sound device works in all other apps just fine but I'm wondering if it is still the sound device with the issue as its still a problem.

Thumbs up for posting the answer. Worst thing about the internet is people saying: "Never mind, fixed it" without explanation for others.
