How might I achieve this eastern/snakecharmer type harmony?

So I've been trying to study various sounds and there's a timbre quality that I haven't been able to find out much about. I'm wondering how to achieve this "snake charmer", eastern, oboe/bagpipe/sitar like quality in these leads.

While I realize the melody is probably following a certain scale the actual timbre of these sounds is present in the harmony during sustained notes. So, it seems to be independent for the most part from the melody being played at least that's what I'm thinking so far. I'm not sure how to create this sustained, sort of dissonant/eastern harmony. Check the following 2 examples - many thanks for any advice:

You just need to smoke a bunch of DMT and then it'll just come to you. I'm pretty sure that's how Shpongle does it at least.

I think more than what scale they are playing, it's a matter of what intervals there are between the notes. Im not 100% sure that came out right, but anyhoo... here's a link on arabian scales http://www.storycompositions.com/20...ian-scales.html

Sounds like someone's just fluttering between keys on a monophonic synth to me.

dominant phrygian in this case.
A double harmonic scale would work as well. Basically the same as a dominant phrygian but with a raised 7 rather than the natural 7.

the dominant phrygian tends to sound asian when you use the first scale degree as a pedal tone but it is still the one being used. It can also function as the Bond chord right before you go to the secret agent man theme. If you just play say everything but the 3rd and 5th which is would be a phrygian but since you don;t get the tones that make it different from the dominant phrygian, the same. anyways...

The style of playing uses a lot or mordents but it is just an improvisation on that scale.

haha Bond chord. With like a suit and a gun and everything.

everyone knows it. Like that one chord. Where you know the bond theme is going to kick in. More so in the Barry days before David Arnold took over.

Thanks all for the input. So, when improving in this sort of way is there any thing I should be paying attention to, to get smooth and concise, aside from just practicing the scale itself?

Anything I should be paying attention to with a pedal tone aside from just sustaining it while the other notes are played?

I'm not very smooth at improving on keyboard but thought I'd see if there's anything I should be paying attention to for decent synth live playing, aside from the obvious practicing of the scales themselves.

I'm not getting anywhere close to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-XmsM6ao64

you have 7 possible notes. the examples have about 4 notes. 7 ^ 4 = 2401 permutations. That is 6 hours maximum of work given 10 seconds per permutation you need to do. Honestly , you are just being real ing lazy.

You mentioned style/aesthetics and gave the impression that there was a particular slant to it other than the scale itself. Hence my question on the use of the pedal tone in this "style". Perhaps I'm unfamiliar with making a drone/pedal tone sound fitting, but I like to take insight and wisdom into my practice time.

I certainly wasn't able to hone in on there only being 4 notes. I'm not very fast at tracking pitch yet, If I had that kind of precision in pitch I probably wouldn't be asking about style. :P

nope. 7 notes in a particular order. Thats it.
