Typically, when a band starts thinking about writing and recording a new record, they want to mix things up a bit, try something new, evolve…

With their 2012 release, Vive Le NuFunk, God Made Me Funky take on that challenge with more joyful abandon than ever before, offering up a tight set of ‘futuristic throwback roller skating jams’ that blend vintage soul, funk, R&B, modern hip-hop in equal measure.

Inevitably, however, every time GMMF set out on a new musical adventure, they’re forced to deal with more than just the question of how to expand on their ever-evolving brand of NuFunk. Put bluntly, while God may have made this band funky in the extreme, as the saying goes, ‘sometimes the lord giveth and sometimes the lord taketh away’. In GMMF’s case, the god of Funk seems to have a thing for offering the band’s singers opportunities they simply can’t refuse.

Featuring a crack 8-piece band including male vocalist Kaybe, keyboardist Danny Argyle, bassist Ben Miller, Rich Grossman on guitar, drummer Alan Witz and Arthur Kerekes on saxophone, Vive Le NuFunk, finds GMMF infusing their unique sound with a vibe inspired by 80s icons ranging from D Train, to Sheila E, to the late, great Donna Summer.

With a huge set list including one-of-a-kind mash-ups of funk, R&B and soul standards from the 70s and 80s, standout covers like their version of Triumph’s ‘Lay It On The Line’ and five albums worth of their own tunes to draw on, on stage GMMF never fail to keep the Funk flowing fast and furious. As a review on ChartAttack.com once put it “If you can’t dance to God Made Me Funky, you can’t dance’. While the lineup has changed over time, that hasn’t, PHATT al maintains: “The fans, the NuFunktonions, they’re like, ‘As long as you give us good music, we’re here to party with you guys and get down with the NuFunk.”

On Vive Le NuFunk, God Made Me Funky pull out all the stops to keep that party going – and nowhere more so than on ‘Who U R’, a heartfelt thank you, PHATT al says, “to everybody who’s allowed us to live our dreams to this point.”

Offering up everything from ‘rip the roof off’ party tracks like ‘Big Time’ and ‘Swagger Stance’, to sweet soul tunes like ‘I’ll Fly Away’, Vive Le NuFunk will inspire NuFunktonions young and old to tear up the nearest rug, strap on their skates, string up some disco lights and get down.

“When we come together with an audience, it always reminds us of going to New York when we were younger, seeing DJs setting up on lampposts, having a jam and a party and people roller skating,” PHATT al says. “That’s the atmosphere we wanted to capture on Vive Le NuFunk. We went hard for five years, doing 150 shows and a new record every year. Before this record we actually took a year off from the band, so it was like we were in zero gravity, floating around and seeing all these possibilities. We didn’t feel any pressure. All we wanted to do was write a record people would want to roller skate to.”
