I think it's a good pic of you Banora!

Ocean and Lira seem like the only ones who know Japanese as Brazil does have a hefty Japanese population. Ocean's location flag is a japanese one.

Anyway here is a translation of what I was trying to say:

I have begun studying japanese because one day, I want to go to japan. But, I have to test in Chicago. Anyone know of any Japanese language books I could read? I only have the JLPT site to look at.

I like it too, which is why I willingly put it up. I rarely have pictures of me that I like. :p

Yes, that is me in the picture. What exactly are you trying to achieve by posting it here in a completely unrelated topic other than looking like a complete twat with terrible trolling skills?

How could it be unrelated if we never knew what the topic was about in the first place? :p

And calm the down, I was just messing around in a Lafiver thread. Wasn't meant to be a diss at you.

People swear by "Japanese for busy people" but it wasn't for me. My advice is to know hiragana and katakana inside-out, first. THen you can tackle the Kanji.

You can also buy Kanji cards on Amazon for JLPT 4&3. They are great.

Ganbatte!

There are graded readers for students. Work your way up and you should be just fine. Also, try to get publications available both in Japanese and in a language you already know (so you can compare).

What workbook/material are you using?

Okay, that's not what you posted.
We used Genki in our classes (Japanese I and II).

By the way, these are the textbooks I know:
  1. Nihongo Shoho: Don't. Just don't. That's the one I used as an undergraduate. It was painful.

  2. Minna no nihongo: This is apparently the most popular course in Brazil due to its insane amount of material. There are videos, flashcards, inflatable teachers, and even books. Totally recommend it if you're a complete beginner.

  3. Pimsleur Method: Not really a textbook, and it won't teach you any writing/reading, but it will give you all the proficiency you need in the first couple of years. Awesome sauce.

  4. Linguaphone: Seems good. Never really used it though.

  5. Teach Yourself: Good for self-study, but I can't see it being used in a classroom. It's also useful probably just for your first steps.
