Hi All

I am currently completing my final masters dissertation at Wolverhampton University.

I am studying the production and performance of various different types of dance music and have created a survey to gather information. I need your responses to inform my research.

The questions are about what type of music you produce, the tools you use and your views regarding the industry.

If you can spare just a few minutes of your time you would help me massively.

Many thanks in advance.

maybe state your actual dissertation in detail or a tentative abstract because as it stands, this seems like an obvious fishing scam. Probably not malicious but it is quite hard to believe your thesis is on the topic at hand being so vague void of any academic literature to contextualize and the fact that using random sources is ok for you.

And if you are actually doing a thesis at that level, I would run this by your professor. You are going to have to present a defence and relying on information from non published sources is a great way to fail. If you want first hand information, your survey does not meet any sort of scientific standard and I would settle for anecdotal evidence from producers that are established. Ie interviewing people that magazines interview.

Quite the questionnaire. Did it though, posting my thesis research here several months ago has proven to be very valuable for me and I can only pay my dues by returning the favour. So there you go :).

Thanks for the support people.

My masters dissertation is a practice based research study into the mobilisation of the EDM DJ/Producers studio: with an emphasis on producing and performing electronic dance music using the digital laptop studio.

Basically it explores the history of dance music production, and documents some of the studio recording history from the traditional hardware studios, to computer studios, to laptop studios.

Ill be looking into current trends of dance music production, with a particular focus on the laptop studio as an integrated studio and performance solution. Also of particular interest to me is the way the internet has opened up a range of possibilities for people to be able to learn and obtain the tools required to produce EDM.

As its practice based research, my written part is not the main part of the project. Ill be making 8 different types of dance music styles using Logic Pro and some third party instruments and plug-ins and documenting my learning processes. The emphasis here being the journey I go on to be able to learn and produce this music, and to reflect how my creative practices have developed with the use of new technologies.

Its now easier than ever to get started producing music of any kind thanks to the advances in studio and computer technology and the advances of the internet. With the vast amount of resources available, such as on-line courses, forums, tutorial videos, access to sample CD's, production templates, MIDI files etc, its often a simple case of purchasing a computer or laptop, a dedicated sound card and getting the right software to get started.

With regards to the survey, its only used as secondary information, and is not intended to prove anything, its merely used to supplement some additional studies I have looked into which are more about bands recording there own music using the home studio and the affect this has on the industry. My interest is in Electronic Dance Music creative practices in particular and hence the reason for the on-line survey. There has not been many studies done on Electronic Dance Music trends as most of the academic literature is from a traditional band point of view. While the Home studio has certainly affected the popular music studio, Electronic Dance Music pretty much started from the home studio so I decided to focus on that, and especially how the DJ/Producer studio has evolved over time.

I have already got many interviews and articles from magazines such as computer music, future music and IDJ/Mix Mag which provide insight into the big producers studio techniques and creative practice. This is adequate, but I just wanted to gather my own bit of supportive secondary information to support my findigs, arguments and discussions.

As you can probably tell this is not your standard full on masters research thesis, as luckily I don't need to go that deep with getting too technical and scientific with primary research and going about it as a scientific study to prove a trend or have a hypothesis. Its simply an arts project with some qualitative data thrown in.

Hope this gives a bit more insight.

Thanks for the responses.

Much appreciated.
