So lately in the melbourne psytrance scene there's this whole fad with glitch hop being popular. Last week I went to a party where a guy who makes tracks like these
Was the main act, and instead all I heard all night (including from him) was like this:
I don't mind that kind've music for an hour here and there, but seriously, who plays this bull all night... and you guys thought dubstep was bad.
Anyway... discuss
Is there a scene for glitch hop where you guys are from?

I like glitch hop. I went to a Brainfeeder night here last year and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to, amazing music all night and a good crowd. However, there isn't really a scene for it here, more occasional gigs where a well known artist will come across and play. It's more likely to be stuff played at a trendy hipster bar around these parts. I certainly wouldn't expect it at a psy-trance rave, and if I did I'd probably feel a bit disappointed.

Any artist or album names you can recommend, Jack? A few of my friends tried to get me into it a few months ago, but everything they played was .
SYSTEM-J
Well, surely they will have played some FlyLo, and if you don't like FlyLo, you don't like glitch hop.
Lews
No FlyLo was played. They're a bunch of Skrillex-heads who have no sense of proper music, which is why I was surprised to see you say you liked glitch-hop. Leads me to the conclusion that there is excellent glitch-hop out there, but they have no idea what it is - hence my request. I'm actually waiting for FlyLo's newest album to come in the post, it should be here in the next few days.

It's not really an area of expertise for me, almost everything I've heard is from or related to Brainfeeder. So that's the obvious place to start if you want the quality stuff. I'm sure there's a lot of out there as well.
Sand Leaper
So is that what they officially call it now? I've heard a lot of names being thrown around for this stuff ever since it first starting blowing up in the wake of Dilla, I believe "nu boogie" or something was one of them...
Anyway, I like this stuff too, as long as it isn't obnoxiously loud and/or too squeaky clean. There's some of it in my Chaos-mix in my sig, but one of my alltime fav mixes with this stuff is "Wonk Fonk" by some guy called Kper, which can be found here: http://www.spannered.org/radio/1432/ Absolutely battered that one when I first came across after hearing a lot of this stuff during my time in NY, when Brainfeeder and FlyLo were just starting to get a foothold in bigger clubs.
An album to check out is definitely Nosaj Thing's Drift, which has a certain level of subtlety that not many others in the genre match up to. Also, for a more recent mixtapey thing, I've heard good things about this.

Oh, there definitely is. The stuff they played made me weep. Was as if someone took Brostep and then threw it through a BT stutter-edit program and then I don't even know. It was just awful. Legitimately made my heard hurt.
The only Brainfeeder stuff I've heard is FlyLo's albums. Guess I'll need to delve in deeper, when I get some time.

But is that style played for 4 hours or more straight?
As I said, it's alright music but it gets really old after a while.

Yeah, the Brainfeeder night I went to was about that long. It was a very interesting event, because it was a gig consisting of live performers and took place in a gig venue, but it had the feel of a club night. The music was non-stop with no down-time between acts, and the energy and vibes built up until the headline act (Daedalus) came on.
Now the night I went to represented some of the cream of the crop in this scene, who probably pulled it off a lot better than local Australian DJs playing the same style. And as I said - if I go to a psy-trance party then I'm expecting to get messy to hard, energetic and trippy full-on rave music, so I would definitely be a bit disappointed to hear glitch hop.
However... in principle, I would have no problem with hearing glitch hop for four hours straight. What I like about the style is that it's very experimental and innovative music, but it remains rooted in hip-hop rhythms, which are extremely accessible and easy to dance to. It strikes the difficult balance between being genuinely interesting while still functional on a dancefloor.

Glitch hop's pretty big round these here parts. Seems every urban hippie that used to be into breaks is now into glitch. Not sure about recommendations tho', as most of the DJs that play it mix it up with dubstep and occasional d'n'b.

I can't image and hope there isn't one over here.
I share your view on this.
