this

plus my New York boys have less expensive options down there instead. It was still a terrific party and THANK YOU for bringing the icon back :):)

Oy, I kept having hallucinations that I was drinking Jack Daniels there!

Definitely a great party! Last B&B that I attended was in 2000 and waited over an hour in line to get in, so this time I was not looking to repeat that experience and was inside by 10p.m. The first few hours were quite slow and somewhat of a buzzkill since people really didn't start showing up until after midnight, but once the rooms filled up the vibe was amazing.

Set times for the headlining DJ's were really late in comparison to here in Los Angeles, but really, who could come on after Guy J if he had been moved earlier? His set was hands down best of the night for me, heard it from beginning to end and still get shivers just thinking about some of those intoxicating tracks! Dark, Black & Blue mood in that room too, the environment fit the music well. Sander was going crazy on the decks and did not disappoint. Gareth seemed to be having some issues with the decks or something, seemed distracted towards the beginning but also played a pretty good set. Thought Carl Müren & Paul Random did a great job of selecting quality tracks as well. Didn't spend much time in the Black Room, did give it a try a few times, not really my style in there.

Nice to see the Blue (Trance) Room packed most of the night, at times more people were in there than the bigger Black (House) room. I had also gone to Armin/Jochen on Friday night, and New City Gas was sold out and packed beyond belief! Circus Afterhours with Jochen also had a great crowd, nice to see Trance & Prog going over so well in MTL. Tickets for Armin/Jochen at he Hollywood Palladium (4,000 people) sold out in less than an hour, so they added a second night. Needless to say, this genre is very popular here too!

Lastly, I'm sure that the economy impacted attendance, at least from the States. Many of my friends wanted to go, but just couldn't afford it. I couldn't either, but went anyway! :D (Free FF miles flight on Delta helped things along...)

That bnb with the airplane landing strip and the mock up of the front half of a concorde plane was probably the greatest thing i've ever seen at a party in Montreal. Jaw dropping!

Responsibilities precluded my going this yr, but in the several yrs I have gone since 2004, I've always found it to be a fantastic party with a largely authentic unpretentious vibe (compared to BeB). My fave is still Tenaglia and Chus & Ceballos at the Big O in '05.

Wonder if Guy J dropped his impeccable emotionally-driven, fairly recent track ``lost and found`` ?

He did play Lost & Found (Original Mix).

He also played the following:

- Kevin Yost - Persistence (Guy J Remix)
- letthemusicplay feat. UTRB- Don't Weigh Me Down (Guy J Remix)
- Guy J - Mish Mash
- Guy J - Fixation
- Pig & Dan - Crazy
- Marco Bailey - Whispering Leaves
- Electric Rescue - Dope (sounded like a new version)
- On Spec - Knights Of Columbos (he played an edit with a vocal that Digweed has been playing for years)

There was a track that sounded like a new Jamie Stevens production (a trippy techno track) and another one that was most likely produced by Robert Babicz (sounded exactly like him).

I left at around 11:45 a friend told me that he played his remix of Gill Norris' Forme towards the end of his set.

I had free tickets, so I had a good night of sleep and headed to the Palais Des Congrès around 8:30 just to hear Guy J's set. He played a good balance of tech-house tracks and more melodic stuff. The programming was not perfect, but it was still a very enjoyable set.

i was actually impressed with the setup. Spin, it's the same floor as ben the regular event they just cut the rooms into squares instead of those long rectangles (which fit the massive size of the latter event).

djs impressed me, sound was rly good (some spots better than others), not too packed, pretty good.

I wuld give it a 7.5/10.

It looks like gays just don't support big parties like that anymore. i mean they come out but the days of 15k gays attending a big festival circuit party in mtl is dead. I don't know why but it feels like bbcm has to follow bal en blanc and go mainstream commercial... or they die....

anyway hats off the organization for another years event. it must be so hard taking care of all the arrangements for the week long festivities.

they grew up. The gay culture changed. Declining numbers will continue and it is pretty hard to advertise to straights and gays as they inevitably impact each in a negative way. Gays just don't want to be around the douches that bullied them in high school .I get that. And straight people don't want to go to a gay event. You can have a gay crowd. But the second you imply anything gay to an event, you scare the red bull vodka massive.

To be honest, the flyers i saw did not invoke any sort of feeling that this would be a monster party. First impressions matter and those flyers were just awful. And it would seem like common sense that reputation alone would guarantee the numbers but as I said, that generation has grown up. The younger people are constantly bombarded by hype that to put such a banal flyer out would give yougins a good indication, regardless of accuracy, that this event will be totes lame. And the potential for raising money for a good cause seems to not have been reinforced as much as it should of been. These types of things should sell out even if people don't show up. It would take about 2 minutes for a publicist to get 10 tickets sold to any person in the limelight that is image conscience and wants to appear like they care.

But i don't know the goal so whatever. I prefer events where you can move. Maybe they did get donations regardless of attendance. I don't know.

I do know that it is the one event a year where i can get a proper handjob and not feel like a fag. I alas didn't go. The website didn't have a donation option.

Good points.

Montreal just isn't the same anymore. As a long time Montreal visitor (I've been going to Montreal religiously for the past five years), it is clear there has been a changing of the guard in terms of the older afterhours type of partier to the newer, younger bar hours type of crowd. The older guys don't go out anymore and there hasn't been that transition of showing the newer kids the ropes.

The new kids have the money, but they are spending it on bottles and they are done the night by 3:30 am. There needs to be someone that can transition those kids spending $200 a night at a bar into spending it into afterhours admissions and energy drinks. But it's easier said than done.

I remember being in line with a straight couple behind me and striking up a great conversation about how the human race united together for the music and the cause. Yes, there were many straight people there and I welcomed the diversity. Now, keep in mind that I'm speaking about Black & Blue 2000.

One sad truth is that the cause of the benefit is part of the reason, many of our friends and loved ones are no longer with us and could not attend. I don't believe there is a single reason for the event growing smaller, but rather many, and perhaps some that we do not fully understand. But I would emphasize that bigger is not necessarily better, and IMO, the music was better than ever!

In my earlier review, I forgot to mention the music in the chill out room. Often an area with lesser known DJ's playing muzak tracks, I was impressed with the intelligent sound coming from the DJ's in this area! I don't know their names, but I know they lifted tired spirits and infused energy back into my soul for another round on the dance floor!

I look forward to the day that Black & Blue is no longer a benefit for HIV/AIDS since it has long been cured, and perhaps it will instead benefit the homeless or promote equality for all. I'm confident that this day will come, and we will dance together as a human race. :)

afterhours, as much as you want to say is about music, has a sexual allure and that resonates with everyone. You have a demography with a staggering amount of 18-25 year olds, diverse, good looking who are sexually charged. It would not take much to have lineups at the afterhours. And with lineups, you can start choosing your clientele, and building a concept. The scene doesn't exist anymore. It isn't like raves just stopped and people needed somewhere to go. This is a new generation. And they like the music. They just don't get the concept of afterhours. And the sausage parties that tend to happen sort of discourage many including females. But the demand is there. Or potential demand.
