Chord with lead

Hi there,

I produce trance recently (but I produce electronic music since 4/5 years), I read music theory books, piano books and I have a problem : I begin my track with the main lead melody. After that I have to find a chord to put on my lead to make a good progression in my track, but... I find some chords but there are not interesting, too basic and boring on my lead (who have a catchy melody).

I have this perfect example :

Omnia - Infina

Chord : 1m30
Main Lead : 2m30
Chord and lead together : 3m30

When I have the main lead, I want to try to have this nice chord progression on it. I can find an interesting chord in the same scale, but I can't put my chord on the lead. Maybe it's more easy to start with a chord and add the main lead after ? What do you think ?

I have the "music theory for computer musicians" book but I don't find any answer to "how find a chord on a lead".

Thank you !

little generic but it sounds ok to me. There is no proper approach. Subjugating a melodic line to chords will usually sound forced and unnatural while using the lead to figure out chords might drive you to only use chords that have that particular note in the chord which can sound boring and forced.

Trance chords and melody are incredibly simple. I honestly cannot think of another genre that has a simpler language than most trance. I would just take 1 hour a day and start transcribing tunes you like.

it's more difficult to make a melody out of a chord progression. Ideally just follow the key of your lead but tou can try weird stuff and see how it goes. What works best for me is to imagine how would i like it to sound and then mess a bit to recreate the sound in my mind.

As said, you don't have to use chords that have the notes of the lead. Try some notes in other scales of the key you're in. Sometimes a bit of intentional dissonance can break up an otherwise boring progression.

i think you need to use both methods if you are going to start thinking in chords. To be honest, the best way is to just get your bassline and soprano line working. Then fill in the voices you feel are missing.
