NHL : Will new regulations improve game

Indications that fall is coming:
1. Temperature gets cooler
2. School starts
3. The NHL promises to crack down on dirty play
This time they really mean it though apparently. I, for one believe them this time. I think that fans are fed up with the refs calling the game the way they should for the first few weeks and then reverting to the way things were before. I despise dirty play. Nothing angers me more than watching a player get hooked and grabbed when he's trying to make a play. This is hurting this wonderful game more than anything else IMO. A direct result of this crackdown will be some ugly games to start the season. If the officials actually stick with it this year, we will see a huge difference, it might just take a while.
One benefit that we will see immediately will be as a result of the hurried up faceoffs. This was one of my favorite features of olympic hockey. It really adds flow to the game.
I like the direction that the League is going in. All they need now is to institute a salary cap, but that's another story.
GO SHARKS!!!:D |

Hurried face-offs should help the game, but as you said, this is just another fall ritual for the NHL it seems.
I think cutting down on obstruction *should* help the game, but if you want to really increase scoring the best way to do it is to simply increase the height of the net...GPG averages have been falling ever since the butterfly goaltending style became popular, what better way to penalize that style than to make the net higher, thus more open net, thus higher (80's esque? Dare we imagine?) scores and more excitement for the fans. Who knows, we might even see some good stand-up goalies again if they did that...
I don't really want a salary cap per se in the NHL, maybe more of a profit sharing scheme to help smaller teams stay in the league...but that's probably just because I'm a fan of the Leafs, one of the richest teams in the league (and living proof that money can't buy a cup if the GM is inept...) |

first off, cheers to fans of the best most competitive game in the world. Yeah, hurry up puck drops should really really help. The proposed open-ice crackdowns SHOULD help, but you really think about it then I feel that they should really look into the Olympic no red-line (except for face-offs) non-rule rule. If they're going to open it up in the middle for breakaways but you end up still tripping up with a two line pass out of the defensive end into middle ice, then what are you really gaining by laying off the hooks and bumps? It's a good concept in theory but yeah these preseseason and perhaps 1st month or so of games WILL be ugly.
Anyhow, thank god the season's almost upon us. Too bad My Wings won't get past 1st round (my preseason prediction.. make it to 2nd round at BEST), but it's nice for me. I love so many teams, it's easier to just state who I dislike ( go to hell avs...) Here's to wishing great things for my other faves Montreal and Toronto in E, and 'Couver, Edmonton, Phoenix in W, and of course the ever ass-kicking Wings.
(If you didn't know better looking at my list you'd swear I lived in Canada, but I don't!) |

this whole netting around the rink thing...i think that's kinda lame
of course it's unfortunate that the 13 year old girl got killed from getting hit by a puck
but when we're at a game, we're supposed to expect the puck to fly out into the seats
just my 2 cents on that whole thing
but hockey season is just a week away
:)

Actually, speaking of the NHL:
Am I the only one who thinks it's complete f*#@*! bulle that the NHL isn't allowing hip checks this year??!
It really pisses me off that one guy gets seriously injured by a legitimate check (Tucker on Peca in the 'offs last year) and suddenly a *classic* piece of the game is made a penalty.
I love seeing a good hip check, and it sucks that the league seems hell bent on taking it out of the game because of the unfortunate injury (and more unfortunate incessant bitching) of one player.
Phew, glad to get that off my chest :p
On a slight side note, I was overjoyed to see MacLean get a new contract with CBC this week, *now* we're ready to start the season properly :D |

So, you're back eh??? hehehe, I really don't know what to think about the supposed crackdown of dirty play. I hope they can do better than last year, as they have a lot of pressure following the Olympics. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.
LET'S GO AVS!!! |

| I can't believe how much coverage the Ron McLean situation got. It's well deserved though, that guy is a huge part of the game in Canada. Everybody loves him and HNIC would not be the same if he weren't there. |

Well, as much as you can love a guy who has a bad habit of dropping horrible puns at least 6 times a broadcast :p
I agree that the coverage was a little OTT, but as I said above, I was very glad to see him re-signed as well...HNIC just wouldn't be the same without him! |
