| i just make whatever i want, and if that happens to be a current sound, why not. if it happens to be video game rock or ambient, then why not as well. |

Pretty much sums it up for me too. I tend not to think in terms of genre either when starting a new track. |

| I am curious by nature I listen to as much music as I can. Knowing what has been done, it is easy to avoid being generic. Might not be cutting edge but at least you won't be a drone which is the problem at least in my opinion. I do hear things i think are cool, and figure out how it was done but that is a process of learning. I don't learn it to use it. The technique will inevitably go into your bag of tricks but knowing that what you are doing was done therefore redundant is an idiot proof way to not sound generic. |

I am caught up in that right now. I think I'm coming out if it though. I had been listening to a lot of sirius sattelite radio, the Electric Area channel. They play Tiesto Club Life, and lots of other progressive house and trance shows. I like some of what I hear, and got this urge to try my hand at the current styles. Some of it is that I would like to get more airplay/sales, sure. My style is unique, but just never caught on.
It's been about a month of this, and now I'm just confused and overwhelmed. For one, keeping current involves learning a lot of new techniques, and you really have to listen a whole lot to train your ear to current styles. A lot of the techniques are cliche and overused so I feel like learning them is pointless, but at the same time I was the one wanting to make music that had more of a commercial sound. I guess my heart just isn't into it. I'm better off just doing whatever comes naturally to me.
I did change my sound a bit, because the label turned down 2 of my EPs. My tracks sounded a bit dated, so I adjusted them a bit for the current trends, and the label released my latest EP. I didn't have to compromise too much, it is good to stay at least somewhat current.
Carl Cox's sets inspired a few tracks, and it seemed very natural. I even recorded some vocals for those. Maybe House is the way to go for me. I haven't submitted those tracks to the label yet, I don't think they deal in that brand of House. |

Only make what i like
Everything you hear influences your production outcome, but i only cater for myself, if it resonates with others too? Great! If not, don't really care. It's about expressing, not about conforming. |

at the moment im working on a track that i would like to stand up to the pro tracks, so ive done a fair bit or referencing (using tracks a few years old - so not exactly current - around 2009 as im liking that sound atm) and definitely borrowed ideas from others in terms of sounds, structure, mixing/effects, etc
however i believe, and hope, that it has some something uniquely me in it, as i wrote all the melodies and made all the sounds etc :) |

I only make what I like. I have an archive of electronica, cold wave, trance, house, hip hop, etc. I plan to do some reggaeton for fun next year.
It's hard to make songs you don't like imo, so why not go your own way? |

I think it's easy, I've made countless tracks that I think are complete garbage. :toothless |

I've tried making mainstream prog house, but I couldn't.
It wasn't about skill I guess, it's just a completely different genre. |

i have the tendency to produce what is not fashionable at the moment, i'll start producing dubstep in 2 years or so i guess, when the hype is gone. I feel like an anarchist in musical terms i hate to produce anything that could be played in a top 40.
But at the same time i'd like to reach the next step and have some airplay on mainstream stations, something that if i don't change my mind won't ever happen sadly.
I don't have many problems switching between styles my moto this days is usually:
Trance (atmospheric)->Techno->Progressive House(melodic)-->Tech House i rarely make 2 trance tracks in a row for example.
But i never tried dnb/dubstep, i'd like to try dnb but i am scared of the learning curve. |
