Obviously since we are in an age where dance music is nearly, if not more commonly heard on laptops and other devices than as in clubs or dance events, the consideration when producing must be made: Do I want this to bassline to be audible for a real presentation like in a nightclub, even if it disappears on a laptop, even if it will sound great in a club, or will I make my basslines more mid-rich, thus allowing it to be heard well on laptop speakers but also dominate the track more altogether?

Obviously a broad range of sounds can be considered, but the grooving of subbass really helps seal a track together when you hear it. So this is more of an objective discussion rather than a question/answer situation.

Some considerations I have are that people who listen to dance music on laptop speakers are probably listening to commercial stuff that's on the radio. I reckon most times anyone who really likes house music attempts a good listen they have their proper speakers or headphones out. Commercial dance music has less emphasis on the actual "feeling" that makes house so special, a groove (which is not really complete without solid, listenable bass), and more emphasis on cheesy vocals and melodies in my perspective. Anywho, discuss.

I'd say mix one club version, and one for radio/album. But those guys. Let them listen to their laptop tweeters, they probably listen to only crappy music anyways.

Anyone who listens to music on their laptop speakers is an , I mean that. Nothing will ever sound good on laptop speakers not even like ambient or spoken word.. you're just missing a huge chunk of the spectrum and there's nothing you can do in the studio to compensate for that... (but I do think layering mid bass and sub bass is common practice and good for say bookshelf speakers or your car) God the idea of mixing your track to cater to some 14 year old's iPod headphones or whatever is so depressing. I really don't give a about the terrible way you choose to listen to music, you little brat. Dance music especially there is just nothing to it without the low end

Nobody listens to music on speakers by choice. You're creating a problem that doesn't exist but may seem like it does because you're spending too much time around too many jackasses concentrated in one spot.

Well, it is a choice. Having good speakers just isn't priority to most people.

A great many people will have something like basic dell standalone speakers and do a lot of browsing tracks / stumbling on them on youtube etc, with such speakers.

I found good techno rpoducers tracks sound great in clubs and on little speakers like this so I'm not so sure there is a stark compromised choice to make.

I wanted to get a pair of the avantone mixcubes for this very reason.. I think someone talked me out of it

Fine. All of my music will strictly be made for Funktion One speakers henceforth, and I will cease any interactions with amateurish DJs and producers who lack class/style.

As for you, I've consistently created threads that are very successful and generate great discussions. You on the other hand, not so much. The amount of worry this is for me is next to zero. I have never made any sonic considerations for altering the way my mixes sound so they sound better for kiddies and on laptops. You could try to find a way to contribute and you wouldn't come off as such a twat just now ;)
