skywarp, this andromeda is "only" $3000 ?
i see you're in canada too... i tried what was supposed to be really top of the line, a sequencer/sampler/synth made by korg... about the same price
is that better quality than this? what's the standard or basic... i would have gotten this stuff but i decided to start out w/ tech1200 turntables instead... may have been a mistake... because producing will come easier |

Well when it comes to synths you should always get the one that sounds the way you need it. The main difference between the Andromeda and the Korg (I'm guessing you're talking about the Triton) is that the Andromeda is a true analogue synth whereas Triton is digital ... the sounds they create are different - so just get whatever suits your needs.
I can just keep dreaming about having either one of those ... hehehe
And about getting your decks first, I don't think that is a mistake ... I believe that a successful producer must know what works on the dancefloor and the only way to learn that is by spinning in front of a crowd. |

just looking at that synth made me almost juice in my pants.. i know from previous postes that you know your tech,, any idea what kind of sound quality each machine outputs?

yeah the triton (korg) was the shiet.. but i dont know the difference between analogue/digital sound production, can someone fill me in please?
do different tracks (out there) use different methods?

| I think the difference between analog and digital sound production is that analog sounds are made from REAL life sound samples.. like drums and high hat sounds come from the real thing. Digital sounds are waveforms generated by a computer or processor. |

first you have to define digital sound and analogue to understand the diff.. we hear in analogue, it's sound as we know it in the physical world.. slamming your forehead into your keyboard makes your keyboard (and your forehead) vibrate, which causes air to vibrate or create pressure change, which makes your ear drums vibrate, which make various hearing mechanisms vibrate.. until finally we get to the cochlea in your head.. little cilia-like nerves that send neuro signals to your brain...

so how does an analogue synth make sound?? A voltage oscillator. It produces voltage waveforms (like sawtooth, sinewave etc) that travel to the speaker and make the magnets move the cones.. which move the air.. etc..
Digital sound production is a pretty broad term. Basically a digital sound is a representation of waveform (information)instead of the real thing. a digital sound doesn't necessarily imply that the sound was originally generated in a computer.. most digital sounds are sampled from analogue sounds (using a D/A converter). The audiophilic (is that even a word?)critism of digital sound is that rather than being a smooth undulating waveform, a digital sound is like a "stair case" of 1's and 0's..
but now with 24bit sampling and a 96khz range, the "steps" are too small for even superaudiophileman to tell the diff.
-(im looking for a 24/96 card right now, any advice?)
someday we wont listen to pressure change.. we'll listen to some sort of cochlea stimulating device.. eardrums and ear bones and ear cartilege..
i dont know e about digital sound generation.. can someone please enlighten me? |

digital sound generation in the context of synthesizers means that instead of having an actual voltage oscillator signal which is passed through various analogue filters you have a digital signal representing the analogue wave which is then passed through simulated filters (which are supposed to do the same thing as the physical analogue filters). The main difference is that the analogue signal has infinite resolution whereas the digital signal, no matter how high the sampling rate, always has finite resolution - meaning that it loses quality after certain manipulations ... the point of argument is if the quality loss is perceivable or not ...
If you're looking for a decent audiophile card, you might want to look at the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 ... decent semi-professional audio card for less than $200. |
