Review/Videos: Chus + Ceballos @ Uniun Grand Opening Party (11/02/2012)

Overall I really liked the club. The light show was very impressive and unique (but the club was pretty dark overall, at least toward the front half), the decor had a nice underground feel to it (concrete walls, limited fancy decor) and probably the biggest bathroom I've ever seen in a night club. No guy will ever have to wait to take a leak here - at least 20 urinals! lol. The room itself is huge (long and narrow) and can easily fit 1,000 or more. On each side there are two massive LED screens that seem to be underused. Before C+C was on they read Uniun most of the time and when they were playing it was usually "Stereo" & "Chus + Ceballos". There was also a very wide/short led screen in front of the booth that gave the booth a nice glow when seen from afar.

Things that need work - heat seemed to be a big issue last night. They need to invest in some fans for the dance floor asap. The sound also needs work as it wasn't consistent around the club. At the front there was too much bass and in the middle there wasn't enough. Overall the volume is too loud because I left with my ears ringing more than any other event in recent memory (and that's with wearing ear plugs for part of the night).

C+C came on at one and their first hour was pretty much garbage. Generic tech house with way too many fluffy vocals and very little drums. At 2am they flicked a switch and started playing more drums and kept the vocals to a minimum. I really enjoyed most of the last two hours. Lots of great tracks that had everyone going ape . They fluffed it up again towards the end which had me leaving on a bit of a downer.

Overall I had a fun night and hope to see better bookings in December because the rest of November is disappointing to say the least.

Apologies for the lack HD - my camera broke and I had to revert to using my old one from 4 years ago :(

Better than nothing!

i love the venue. the decor was kept to a minimal and there is TONS of dancing space.

the temperature is something that needs to be addressed. the back half of the club was comfortable (near the entrance) but the front half felt like the heating was set to full blast.

the sound is alright. i feel it needs more mids.

lighting is unique and pretty kickass.

i would love to see some serious prog bookings here. im going to start praying every night.

I really liked how they kept the inevitable bottle service tables in the back half of the room, barely touching the main dance area. I didn't see them the whole night from where I was dancing. There was a lot of tables and chairs on either side of the front area but it was open for anyone to sit. Kudos on that one!

there were vip booths on either side of the dj booth on the dancefloor area but they are against the wall so they were not in-your-face. and more booths at the back of the club near the entrance as welll as booths being installed behing the dj booth.

Kotsy, you pretty much nailed everything I was going to say. I agree on all aspects (except C&C.. I thought it was on par with their bland DD set, but I wasn't expecting much from them anyway.) Also, the mixed crowd was unexpected.

And yes, it's a shame about November's bookings. I will most definitely be coming back though.

Given the location and the past club's clientele I have a feeling this place will have a mixed crowd pretty much every week...

LOVE that space.
Big Boss
Way too hot in the front.

Slow bartenders, clubs lose money with slow service.

Sound was meh.

Great bathrooms and fast entry and coat check.

They played a bar hours set, thank God i get to see them tonight in an afterhours.

I was hoping for footwork 2.0 (I dont know why, I just want a bigger space maybe lol). Loved the club/space, but the crowd was top40'ish and sound could have used more ooomph.

Will definitely check it out again a few times, so far am impressed with the venue. PS. smell of fresh paint :D

patpicos
wow the lighting is awesome. Reminds me of the glowstick thing they had at Sasha & Digweed at Pepsi center in MTL.

Last vid...looks the place is empty :(
