| quote: | The Quebec government has introduced a bill that would mean general elections will be held every four years on a fixed date.
The measure aims to prevent governments from choosing the timing of elections based on their chances of winning. |

I wonder how it would be, if the shoe was on the other foot and the whole tuition fiasco tossed out the PQ and brought in the Liberals in as the minority government. I bet the PQ supporters would be crying fowl. Plus if we had this law in place already, the protests wouldn't of had done anything. All I can say is, PQ please don't be an ass about democracy and how our system works.
I want another election now! |

From what I understand, the bill would not eliminate the parliamentary system where minority governments can be defeated on a vote of confidence. It would only make it so governments would be obligated to hold elections at least every four years. |

| Only for a majority gov Jester which is totally welcome and definitely not a nasty change. It prevents the party holding power to have an advantage by declaring election whenever they want to or at stupid moments like during summer vacations. It also represents a saving for the Chief Electoral Officer who had to mobilize, train and pay election staff, based on election rumours in case he would need them. $3 million were once spent uselessly when Charest (i believe) gave indications 3 times that he was close to declare elections. Fixed elections is the way to go. It will be last week of Sept or first of Oct, every 4 years... Similar to the US. |

| The only downside I see with this is the fact the parties will get in election mode during 12 months before every election date which may slow down all parliament activities. Still a good system imo...but then it seems we'll have minority govs for a while now that we have 3 popular parties |

| i don't really see the issue. It is fair and reduces impulse voting when a party is experiencing a boost in popularity that is unsubstantiated. Seems to just reduce hype which i think is good. |

| It's Quebec, who cares? Most of the world can't even find it on a map because the province seems to think that the rest of the world will just give in and do business in French. It's home, i still love it, but its ignorance (everyone outside of Montreal...come on, it's true) towards globalization and what is really going on is going will make those natural resources cheaper...not make Quebec richer. I may be drunk, but I'm drunk in almost 5 languages now.:P |
