Virus TI summing to mono badly

Hi all

has anyone had any problems with TI sounds, specifically sounds making use of unison spread wide (a lot of the sounds i make in the virus use this). When i try summing to mono, these wide sounds such as pads and leads and mid basses collapse very badly, and sound like phased out if im honest.

Other synths with a big stereo spread (eg sylenth) dont seem to have this problem.

I noticed that the problem seems to be better when bouncing out of the hardware outs rather than the usb outs. The problem is that im having latency/jitter issues with my soundcard so cant bounce out the hardware outs until i get this sorted/replaced.

Is this problem specific to certain set ups, or have other people noticed the same? I found a thread on gearslutz which suggests other people have had similar problems.

Happy to post up audio examples later

I noticed this too, sounded like some sort of nasty phasing going on when collapsed to mono??

i havent really noticed this on the nord with unison spread, certainly it doesnt sound anywhere near as nice when you mono the sound but i didnt think it sounded as bad as the virus - will have to have a closer listen

However I wouldnt worry too much - how many mono systems is your music going to be played on??

different synths do unison differently.

glad someone else noticed it too

good point too - im not even sure if this tune will leave my house let alone get played on the radio etc :)

however it does seems a bit amateur hour if it sounds like e in mono - im going to investigate with bouncing out the hardware outs and see if its any better (just for the sake of experimenting as the timing will be off)

Do you use virus control too or run it out the analog e outs?

bounce it to audio, manually delay the samples on one side instead of just reversing the phase. You will find some happy medium. Or you can change the pitch slightly on one side. I would check the unison settings in terms of actual phase and how that works. I honestly can't remember.

only have it a couple of weeks so still getting used to the setup - im using virus control therefore does that mean the audio is going over usb??

I might just stop using the virus control and use it like the nord, virus control is nice tho...

using USB , do you have to use the clock from the TI ? Just wondering what sample rate the actual transmission is. Seems like a better idea to always use audio out. Unless you run your system at 96 kHz.

jeez , its internal sampling rate is 48. No wonder it sounds kinda fla fla

With virus control you can root the audio to any of three audio channels through usb, or you can root it through the analog outs :) I like virus control too i haven't even touched the actual synth

@L4C i dont know how the timing works with usb. I did bounce out the analog outs and thought that the summed to mono version sounded better than the usb outs - will have to try a more thorough test

I think your right this is the way to go, in fact i did originally bounce out all the tracks through the analog outs before realizing that my sound card has F**ked up all the timings. Not only are the parts out of time but there are inconstancy out of time, like some slightly before the grid and some after - so i cant just nudge the parts into place.

Its supposed to be quite a good card, and sounds good i think, but ive been trying to sort out the latency/jitter for ages and am now looking at replacing

Cheers

pretty sure that the TI will be the master clock which is kinda ty. What advantages does the USB in have ? I mean other than the 0 latency which isn't such a big deal if you set up an audio track with a 64 buffer.
