Because the label achieved its success by simply licensing tunes from smaller labels for bigger exposure, not by releasing actual original material.

They facilitated wider distribution of good music. That seems valuable. And if Hooj only licensed the good stuff, then it was a reliable source. Maybe Hooj's originality is overrated, but this doesn't diminish my respect for Hooj much.

Sure. The "overrated" label, however, is more about the idea of putting Hooj Choons in the same league as labels that actually innovated within their respective genres with original material.

I was curious about this, so I spent just a couple minutes glancing at Hooj Choons on discogs. From what I can tell:

Original to Hooj Choons:
LSG - Netherworld
Lustral - Everytime
Tilt - Invisible
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster
Solar Stone - Seven Cities

Licensed/repressed by Hooj:
Energy 52 ‎– Café Del Mar
Pete Lazonby ‎– Sacred Cycles
Marmion ‎– Schöneberg
Three Drives - Greece 2000
C.M. ‎– Dream Universe
Space Manoeuvres ‎– Stage One

Those are some respectable original signings by Hooj, but it looks like the really big tunes were licensed/repressed.

Netherworld was licensed from Superstition. Basically, I'd say you're a bigger fan of Red Jerry as a businessman rather than Hooj as a label.

Ah, you're right. I can't find a Netherworld release from them. Was it common to sign tracks and license them without releasing?
