Why Do Top 40 DJs Have to Suck? I'm So Thankful for Our Scene. (pg. 2)

It may not be my way but to each their own. Can anyone name an International Top 40 DJ that has come to Toronto? Are there even DJs that you would call International Top 40 DJs.

One might even say that those going to the Top 40 clubs are going more for the music than those going to see particular DJs.

well said.

Only way I get through those nights is drunk as eff. Once you go into the land of blackouts you stop caring about BPM and focus on your next drink + when/where/how to piss it out. Some Maslows hierarchy of getting hammered type crap. Not my preference at all but like you said a few times a year a birthday is likely to drag you into one of these scenarios and the bottom line is you gotta get through it somehow. So my 2 cents would be just to drink a lot harder next time around.

Haha, yes, the blackout would certainly help overcome my distaste in the music. I was sober on Friday night (not really one to drink anymore, save the occasional glass of scotch or wine--so sophisticated, I know (insert eye roll emoticon)), which obviously lends itself to being aware of the music. Really though, I had a fun time with friends--just wish the DJ was better.

Yup a night out a place like that = have to get liquored up good.

My buddy "dj's" like that though. Has all the top 40 crap downloaded and hits sync on his m audio or whatever thing and flip flops so fast songs barely have a chance to play...ya ya some trance things can be painfully long but theres a balance in there.

stop dropping into a new song 45 seconds after you just started the other one. its annoying.

ADD is the right word for it for sure.
This whole generation cant be bothered to pay attention to anything.

I know there's some research that's gone into bar psychology and switching songs at a rapid rate to trick people into thinking more time has passed so that they consume more alcoholic beverages, but I'm of the mind that a club that offers a quality product will have a better chance at retaining clientele and achieving longevity. After all, how many of these standard clubs even see their two-year anniversary?

It's transient music, for a transient crowd, during a transient part of their lives. The 'clubs' are short lived, because their business is short term.

The only places I can think of that survive a long time are places with a theme: Horseshoe tavern, Sneeky Dee's, Guvernment, they become THE place for that type of music.

If all you have to do is play loud music, and serve up booze, then why bother paying a lot for a DJ? Just went to my office xmas party, and we found the cheapest DJ for the night, all equipment+karaoke for $500 for the whole night. He played top 40, people drank, people danced, mission accomplished. Mixing was brutal, song choices all over the place, but it got the job done.

There are good top 40 DJs... DJ Swet (Chris Sheppard's DJ) was a good example back when Shep was doing the rounds. He was a dink, but a great DJ for a top 40 club. He could mix, he programmed his sets and had a sense of where the night should ebb and flow.

I got my start as a top 40 DJ and it's a lot more difficult in some respects. You're expected to keep the dancefloor full of chicks, the owner (and his underaged drunken son) are bugging you to play certain tunes and telling you when, drunk girl tells you no one is dancing, etc. You get a lot more grief as a top 40 guy. With house clubs, there's more leeway because the DJ is seen as an integral part of the night.

Most top 40 guys don't care about mixing. They care about keeping girls on the floor playing the girls can sing to so the guys will come out. Guys don't typically dance on their own - unless it's a house club.

There's also the element of these types of venues being places where you go to be seen and music isn't to be heard. It's just a by-product of the night.

That said, there used to be this guy who would play at Caesar Martini's in Waterloo on Thursday nights and he was one of the most technically gifted, baddest-assed DJ's I've ever heard. He could cut, scratch, beatmix and really did a good job going through genres. You could tell he was there only for the paycheque, but he did his best with what he was given.

The bar makes no money of these/us guys :p

so true, They hate us

I reluctantly had to go Brant house one night, work thing and in the line-up was chatting up these girls. They told the music here is so good. I asked what kind of music it is? The said really good house music.

I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

Bon Jovi living on a prayer lmao

thats because the dj just played their favourite song.......

the same song they requested on the radio fifty times the same day.

Different strokes for different folks, but what is mind boggling for me is most of these girls like gangsta rap/hip hop and they go nuts for it.

Does not compute.

But I do respect those clubs because they don't have to drop 10k on a DJ/promotion to pack the club.
