Here's what I propose: list all the EDM parties you can remember attending this year and then create a shortlist for your top 5. Or, break them down into categories; e.g. set of the year, party of the year.
Tech Noir 2: loft party in January featuring G. Cue, Anthony D'Amico, Nikola, and Mike Gleeson
Maceo Plex & Eats Everything at Footwork: my birthday/St. Patrick's Day
Promise Garden Party: Great Hall--not sure who any of the DJs were, but they rocked it, and the decorations were amazing.
Sonny Fodera at Footwork
Sunnyside Pavilion on June 9: can't remember who was playing
Comfort Zone on June 9: first time there--what a sound system!
Digital Dreams: both days at Echo Beach--Lawler, Hawtin, Mark Knight, Fanciulli, Dubfire, Carlo Lio, Guy Gerber, etc.
IDentity Festival: Echo Beach with Eric Prydz, Arty, etc.
Suicide Circus in Berlin, Germany: don't know who the DJs were, but what a cool club!
Sugar Beach in August w/Lee Foss, Matthew Dear, Soul Clap, etc.
Labour of Love night one at Guv: Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Mark Oliver
Art Department at Cinema
Catz & Dogz at Footwork
Carlo Lio at Footwork
Gatecrasher at Sound Academy: Solarstone, Daniel Kandi, etc.--awesome trance party
Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Carl Craig at The Hoxton--sardine can filled with insane music
Art Department & Lee Foss at Moskito
Kaiserdisco at Footwork
In listing all of these, I realize I attended a lot of amazing events. In fact, each one of these parties was awesome. I might be forgetting one or two as well.
Party of the Year: Digital Dreams.
I wrote a massive review in the DD thread. Incredible concept, dancing on the beach, amazing music, beautiful weather, gorgeous women, surrounded by friends, Canada Day, fireworks, epic two days of dancing. Lawler, Hawtin, and Dubfire/Carlo Lio were the sets of the weekend for me, and I had an incredible time listening to every DJ I saw perform.
Set of the Year: Carlo Lio at Footwork.
I wrote a review for this as well. Despite being dead sober, I had an out-of-body experience from dancing so hard and getting lost in the music. The most entranced I've been by live music.
Honourable Mentions:
--Maceo Plex & Eats Everything at Footwork
The place was pouring sweat. Footwork was dark and dirty and my shirt was translucent within minutes of arrival. Eats Everything set the stage with a banging set and Maceo Plex absolutely destroyed the place until close. Wildest atmosphere I've experienced in FW.
--Art Department at Cinema
My first time seeing them, and boy, did they deliver. Not the ideal venue--especially considering it was a TIFF party, but the sound system is brilliant, and I was able to find space to dance towards the back. A crew of about 10 of my friends and I formed a dance circle for the last hour that was undeniably one of the best party moments of my life.
--Art Department & Lee Foss at Moskito
Lee Foss was solid, but Art Department was out of this world. Awesome crew of friends, awesome dancing. The version of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" (which I'm pretty sure is by Soul Clap) that AD dropped at the end was the icing on the cake--such a sexy set.
My only disappointment of 2012: Eric Prydz' set at IDentity. Felt like he built for 72 minutes of an 80 minute set.
Edit: And, disappointed that I missed Jaytech's set at Labour of Love and Guy J's set on Thanksgiving weekend--those are the two DJs I most want to see.
Incredible year. |

feelgood |
1) Sasha @ Stereo MTL in March. The man is a fkn legend.
2) Robert Babicz @ Harvest Festival. Dancing in a foggy crashed spaceship at 4am. Need anything more?
3)Dave Aju/James Teej @ the Rainbow palace on April 7th. It was my birthday and turned out to be an amazing intimate event. The vibe was just right. |

+1 with prydz. eric prydz definately the most disapointing set of the year... waited 4 years or so to see him and after the first two tracks (one being viro) it was complete
maceo plex / mjc @ fw for best club night vibe was amazing
enjoyed digweeds set far more than sashas
digital dreams had a great time both days + 5minute go train from the house was key so it will prob get my vote aswell
mark farina @ sunnyside was dope too
almost forgot the cherry beach show... that may actually just take my vote away from DD |

Any Mansion party. And anything at Moskito so far. (and on that note, Robert Hood tomorrow!)
Though, while not "EDM", my absolute favourite event of the year was Dan Deacon @ Lee's Palace. But you guys probably wouldn't care about that.
Couldn't make it to any of the festivals, still bitter about that.
Overall though, great year for partying. Never before in Toronto have I had the dilemma of having too many parties to choose from weekend after weekend. Used to just be an occasional "problem". |

My top few parties of the year:
Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg at FW in Feb
Digweed at Guv
Guy J on thanksgiving
Joris Voorn at Maison on halloween
Danny Tenaglia at Stereo, recently in November
After I listed my top events of the year I realized how much I love partying at clubs.
Digital Dreams was fun too, I could probably fit it into my top events for the year!
I saw a few artists this year for the first time, the ones I enjoyed were- Guy Gerber at DD, Mark Farina at Sunny side, Jamie Jones at FW, Nima Gorji at Cherry Beach, Hobo at Moskito, Kasierdisco at FW...
Let's hope the good streak continues with the remaining parties, before the end of this year. :p |
