Meriter, thanks for taking the time to post such a helpfull and informative post....
Ive only used a daw with no outboard gear and am looking for help or information related to using outboard gear.
I realize we cant all be as helpfull as meriter is but any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated. |

| basically, rack mount gear is very similar but where as a table top synth would lie on a table. a rackmount synth would be placed on a rack. |

perhaps if you specified what sort of outboard gear you want to use with your DAW?
Synth? Sound module? FX? Compressor? Mixer? Audio interface? Crossover? Preamp? Distortion? Something else? |

| Your question is quite vague - are you talking about "how do I screw something into a rack"? That's really the only pure "rack" question there is, everything else is the same as for any hardware synth. |

Please be responsive if you're going to ask a question. It's not even a good question, you don't specify if you're talking about an instrument or FX, or what you want to do with it, nothing.

It is somewhat the 4chan of EDM boards, given it's basically unregulated at this point. |

Kinda, but I wouldn't go that far. There's a self regulation that happens most of the time.
The stinging acidic wit only really gets unleashed on those that post dumb, mindnumbingly obvious or incredibly vague questions. you ask decent questions, you actually get answers like no where else.
Seriously, there's no other EDM boards where you get this level of knowledge, as long as you can pay dues and wade through the crap. |

| I apologize if my question wasnt detailed enough..Im simply looking for information on how to actually connect the rack units to the daw.I have a external audio interface.Basicly im wanting to add outboard compressors,exiters,ect..to my arsenal.Do i need to run all of these into a patchbay, then from there to my audio interface. Is there a specific type of audio interface i need.Im just looking for a good site that explains stuff like this...Ive googled and used the search engine here and havent really found anything.thanks |

Well, that gives a little more info but again, you really have to go in to specifics.
What DAW? What interface? What Outboard Gear? How do you want to run it? (Directly in to the sequencer or as a chain or through a mixer or a patchbay), What are you trying to do? Why do you want to go hardware/outboard route?
.....I could go on but really unless you give specifics everyone would just be pissing in to the wind by trying to answer your vague questions.
The good news is that, yes, this is the right place, you just got to ask the right questions ;) |
