3 trance all-time fav:
(3) John '00' Fleming - For Your Ears Only
among the first trance mixes i heard back then, and one of the few mixes that still gives me chills. hypnotic, full of energy, not cheesy at all. fabulous track selection (he's always been good at hunting for rare material. Cyberstorm - Our Energy and Deepsky - Stargazer are definite highlights), impeccable mix. better than Progressive Euphoria, or even White Label Euphoria.
(2) BT - Movement In Still Life (Asia Double CD)
second best of 1999! all sublime moments from beginning to end, the flow seems natural and coherent, awesome modern city vibes. disc 2 contains Sunblind (which didn't get a US release until 2 years later on R&R) and Fibonacci Sequence, both were considered ultra-rare material back then.
(1) Hybrid - Wider Angle
best of 1999. remember the first time when you heard If I Survive and Finished Symphony?!? they're impossible to top. disc 2 has their live gig in Tokyo, which is even better. Snyper sounds 10 times better live.

(3) New Order - Get Ready
surprisingly, they sounded better when they went back to their Joy Division root, and when synthesizers took a backseat. brilliant songwriting. Peter Hook's killer bass. Bernard Sumner's poignant lyrics and singing. what do you get? New Order. absolutely no filler here. best lyrics?

(2) Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
bad boys. baaad, baaaaaaaad boys. they'll break your window, throw beer bottle at your car, and scream at you :disbelief. from Kill All Hippies' "Hello this is gorgeous, anybody out there read me? ...you've got money, i've got soul" to "COME ON, COME ON, HIT THE ACCELERATOR, ACCELERATOR" in Accelerator, from "your autosuggestion psychology, elimination policy. a military industrial, illusion of democracy" and the electronic swirl in Swastika Eyes to the legendary " off, you're sick, , , sick, , , sick, , , sick, , , sick, , ..." in Pills, from the eerie trippy sound in Keep Your Dreams to the monstrous MBV arkestra (if they move, kill them)... it's all hall-of-famers here. bad boys :clown:. mobs :whip:. maniacs :disbelief. call them faeces if you like, they just don't give it a flying :)
(1) Massive Attack - Mezzanine
trip-hop at its best! dark music at its best!! sleaze at its best!!! you'll listen to it when you're driving home, then play it again in the kitchen when you're making supper; you'll listen to it for the rest of your life when you're stranded in a island, or serving in a prison; you'll even want to play it when you're making love. no, seriously, i mean it, you will. hahaha.

has been for ages spesh track 6 - Dissolved Girl.
others would include Sasha & Digweed - Northen Exposure, Delerium - Karma, Sasha - Airdrawndagger to name but a few :)

SO good. 1 side proggy, 1 side hard.
Chemical Brothers - Surrender
The Chems are amazing. This is prolly one of the best CD's i've heard.
Cream Future Trance + CFT Ibiza
Not the best mixed CD's in the world but they both capture the trance scene in a CD. |

Favourite Trance (or electronic oriented) discs:
- Both Chicane full lengths
(my earliest forays into Trance-ish music, and still high on my all time list)
- Sasha - airdrawndagger
(new album but quality all the way, this is going to be in my travelling CD case for years to come)
- PvD - Out There and Back
(quality tunes from top to bottom on this one...)
Favourite non-Trance oriented:
- Sunny Day Real Estate "Diary" (<--- all time favourite disc there...completely defines the way I've felt at so many points in my life)
- Mineral "EndSerenading"
(another of my old favourite bands, I saw these guys play once live and will never forget it. Like Sunny Day they somehow explain how I feel perfectly...)
- Bad Religion "All Ages"
(a greatest hits disc per se, but it only covered stuff from their original label, Epitaph, which was miles beyond their more recent stuff IMHO) |
