DJ Shadow Kicked Off Of Decks In Miami

*Video in the article*

Just when you thought the clubbing world couldn’t get any more tasteless, news this weekend that DJ Shadow was kicked off the decks of Miami’s Mansion club. This just months after similar incidents involving house DJs Mark Farina and Dennis Ferrer and the crowds that allegedly paid to see them.

Shadow was asked to end his set approximately 20 minutes after it began, and was replaced by the far far far less legendary DJ No Máz. The incident was captured on video, with Shadow telling the crowd “I’ve waited a long time to play here, but they said this is too future for all y’all.” He then went to his Twitter account to proclaim, “I don’t care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet. I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ…ever.”

What makes this incident perhaps even more perplexing is that the night was part of Shadow’s “All Bases Covered” tour and was heavily promoted as such on the Mansion website, as well as in the local press. So why do respected DJs continue to get bumped off the decks for playing the music that made them famous? And why do clubs and promoters continue to place DJs in front of unappreciative audiences? And while we’re at it, why do people pay large covers ($30 in the case of DJ Shadow) to hear music they don’t like? And did the fans who did knowingly and eagerly pay to see Shadow get their money back when the plug was pulled?

The problem will continue as long as promoters, venues, managers, booking agents and DJs continue to lump all music played on turntables together as a single scene/genre, ignoring the immense differences in sounds, at the expense of fans and musicians alike,

mansion is a club, he should have never been booked there

He posted this on another board....

"Wow, I'm shocked to see my situation stirred up this much conversation. I would like to thank all of my fellow Djs for your support, and to those of you who are charging me with failing to read and adjust to the crowd, well theres a bit of truth there to. Its impossible to please everyone, especially when your goal is to put on a unique entertainment experience.
My audience was in attendence that night and appeared to be enjoying the atmosphere I was creating, unfortunatley there were others who were not satisfied and those people had the power to pull the plug. As a Dj it is your job to drive the bus but the reality is that at the end of the day someone else owns the bus and the all mighty dollar powers it. The only thing you can do as an artist is learn from the experience and move onto the next show. My show isn't for everyone, if it was it wouldn't be as unique and I wouldn't be me.

I'm kinda tired of hearing about these things - it seems like a publicity stunt, on some level. It's like DJ Sneak clawing his way back into relevancy by slagging off pop-oriented acts... Shadow had totally fallen off my radar (and I don't I'm the only one who feels this way).

So you actually think he planned this?

Shadow can give a F about that kinda of stuff. He's comfortable enough to show up at random venues in the Bay area and play out of no where for FREE!

If he was so worried about media hype and getting money he wouldn't do such things.

Go off yourself.

That is pretty ing ridiculous. That is just bad booking/management. In my opinion they just look plain dumb kicking these DJs off the decks. How can you not know what Shadow's style is and what he likes to play? And how can you not know what type of crowd comes to your club? Pretty ridiculous.

IMO Shadow's team should have probably done their homework too though. He does not really play clubs like that, so I dunno why he chose to play there, and why they booked him.

Overall though, it's still pretty shameful to kick a guy like that off the decks.

Does this touch you that deeply? What a in' :tongue3
Get a grip

And Nero - of course I don't think he planned this, but I just don't see what all the fuss is about. The last time this thing happened and got everybody's attention it was at the same exact club. Mansion, along with it's sister club in Miami, has been bringing a lot of acts with slightly more underground cred over the past year or two it seems. This doesn't happen to everybody. Don't you wonder why?

My 2c is that it's because this guy is barely even relevant at this point and he, much like DJ Sneak, doesn't see himself as a DJ but rather as an 'educator'. Of course, I could be reading the whole thing wrong (but I know I'm not the only one who sees things this way). Juan MacLean posted something that caught my eye on his fbook the other day:
quote:
Last night a DJ friend who's name I won't say but rhymes with Lazaro Casanova was hanging out with me in the DJ booth and I turned to him and sort of apologetically said 'so when i play places like this I keep throwing out stuff like recognizable edits in order to keep everyone interested after I go too deep with loopy stuff....' And he said, 'I think what you are describing is called being a DJ.' Indeed.

Some people are getting so caught up in educating that being a DJ slips right past them.

And, another great point -- as msilin said: why the f would dj shadow want to play there anyway. Maybe it's the same reason as why hip hop sucks in 96....
msilin
Right, I guess the name "DJ Shadow" is kind of a misnomer - he's not as much of a DJ as he is an artist/producer. I'm sure back in the day he used to do some great DJ sets (there are some solid radio recordings of him), but he does have his limits and he can't just rock a Miami nightclub. Both parties should have known that. Perhaps they thought they would draw his fans in, but judging by the douchebags yelling in the video, sounds like the promoters didn't do a great job at that. That's why ultimately, I think the club looks unprofessional.

The underground acts are usually booked on Wed, Thurs, or Sunday. Friday and Saturday are usually commercial music nights. They probably should have booked him one of those days I mentioned instead of the nights the douchey VIP crowd is around.

The real losers in this situation are the fans that wanted to hear/see Shadow and only saw him for a little. I could imagine anyone here would be pissed as hell to get to a venue to see someone you want, and then for him/her to get kicked off. Just makes you wonder if you should buy that ticket or not.

They could have gotten a refund once Shadow was pulled off the decks, that's what I would have done...
