OR

Is it that you guys' tastes have evolved/changed ?

I highly doubt a good producer isn't a good producer anymore, he just doesn't do it for you anymore.

I can guarantee you that Luciano was not playing anything like that 4-5 years ago.

... Or the producer sucked the whole time, you just realized that he sucks recently lol.

I love Deep Dish's earlier and I think their last album is bad ...

Do I think they are bad producers now ? No it's just because they don't produce the same music they used to and guess what ... IT'S ING NORMAL every artists has to grow and explore new venues. That you don't like what they do now might be normal, that you bash on them is retarded !

Can an artist that we once enjoyed, become dull and suck? Looking at it in a purely subjective way, then I would say no, but that would force us to respect someone who made songs consisting of a 909 kick drum, repeated for 10 minutes. Clearly this is an exageration, but I'm using it to prove my point.

Where do we draw the line?

Let me use Mauro Picotto as my punching bag.

During his early career he made some real chart topping trance. That is what won him his huge fan base. Once established as a respected DJ and producer, he became interested in the world of techno. His switch to the harder and darker side of music, went over very well with his fans. --Enter minimal-- Mauro begins to produce minimal music and all hope is lost(I loved minimal at that time btw). He literally disappeared off the face of the map, except for some forgettable minimal techno EP's that would appear out of the blue.

Is all this subjective and based on my changing taste of music? Definitely not! If you watch his career on a graph, you would see the spike and then the sudden drop. He probably felt forced to make minimal because of the changing times, but changing your taste in music for others is always a bad thing.

I'm not saying some producers don't suck with time.

I'm saying in general (when we're not talking ghost producers ...) a good producer will always be a good producer. If they don't make music you like anymore it has more to do with tastes than talent.

That's completely reasonable and I have no objection to this.

We can agree then, that it should be up to the listener to prove with facts that the artist has somehow declined in quality. This can be a hard thing to prove though and it's not always obvious.

Ok well it seems that the argument you're making is not really the one that I'm/others are making. I agree that perhaps "suck" is not the right word to use as that implies that they're downright bad rather than the fact that they simply changed their direction. In that sense I agree with you in most cases. Like Luciano, as much as I dislike his new stuff, I suppose saying it "sucks" is too harsh.

Plus in a lot of cases the actual production quality has gotten better but it's just their creativity/degree of innovation that hasn't.

The fact that production quality has gotten better, could even be one of the reasons why creativity has decreased in some artists. We have access to such a huge arsenal now and that might be causing some artists to get lazy. It's pretty sad though because it should be having the opposite effect!

I'n sure the tranceheads could come up with several examples here

Amen, Graham.

C+C are like this basically any time they come to Toronto. I really need to see them at Stereo because they still play tribal there from what I've heard.
