Happy they did that. But I am not sure how long Story will keep bringing techno events when they can only charge $20 on a Saturday for guest DJs. That oppossed to the $75 to $150 they usually charge and get for guest DJs on that night at Liv and Story now. The guys over there are very much about the bottom line and they are printing money at Liv, so that setup at Story does not make much monetary sense for them. I predict it lasts through WMC and then it's over ...

Techno DJs also don't get anything close to what the EDM superstars get in regards to booking fees. Only a select few techno DJs command high dollars (Hawtin, Cox, Carola, Dice, etc), whereas guys like Thomas Gold, Arty, Chuckie, etc print money at every show they play.

Dubfire has been around, gets paid well and I suspect at Liv/Story he will get paid as much if not more than Arty, Chuckie or Gold. Yet the door is $20 for him, and up to $150 for Gold on a Saturday. Economics 101 says that is not good business. And DJs set their price in part based on what club they are playing at, the size of the club and its capacity. Lets take a pricey DJ like Kasake. No matter what he charges, between door/ticket sales, table sales, etc I suspect he would bring in a lot more "profit" than Dubfire or Magda could ever bring in to Story at $20 a head. Even if they sold 1000 presales at that price it would barely cover the electric bill.

Anyways I hope this does well, and that they bring Hawtin asap before goes bad ...

I know I doubted their strategy in the other thread, but I'm changing my mind a little. Maybe it's my cold talking. It's a mistake to look at these nights in a vacuum, too. A big show like Dubfire will cause a stir among the techno crowd; word of mouth is everything when you're trying to start something new. And I just don't believe Dubfire gets paid what Thoams Gold, Arty, and Chuckie get paid. Those DJs are nowhere near as talented, but talent does not equal money. And DJs like Magda and C/D DEFINITELY do not get paid what the big EDM guys get paid.

And since Story is affiliated with LIV, I could see this being a side project for Grutman. Maybe he thinks with his support and backing, this type of music will blow up down there. Apparently the Hawtin show at LIV was a huge success, not only by counting the dollars but the vibe of the party was supposedly on the mark. I don't think it's so far-fetched that people are just sick of the same ty EDM DJs.

I agree with you UCF about the fact they should not bring the exact same DJs and types of music to both clubs. I was only questioning how long it would last if they were going to be charging only $20 to get in on Saturdays, when they charge so much more for lesser-known and less established DJs. I was at Hawtin, and he did bring it big time. But they certainly did not give away the door at $20 that night. Hopefully they find a way to mix in techno and some trance as well at Story, and people will be willing to pay $40 for DJs they want to see at a proper big room club. Because that is the lowest price point I can see them staying at ...

I'd love to make it but I'm still recouping from Aly & Fila last night. Have a blast and make sure to leave a review. I hope it's as much fun as Magda.
