I think it's time to retire my current computer. It has served me well for a long time, but the CD and DVD drives have been broken for a while, it's seven years old, and it's generally turning into a fail in various ways.
1. I'd like to get a desktop, PC.
2. I don't know anything about the newer versions of Windows because I've been using XP / Ubuntu for a long time. Is Windows 8 any good, or better to stick with 7?
3. I don't know jack about hardware (what kind of hard drives, processors, memory, etc. are good), which is why I'm asking you guys.
4. Generally like to stay under $1000 if possible, and preferably under $800. Not looking for anything state of the art, just enough to run Ableton and Reason without many hitches, browse the web, burn CDs, use Skype, etc.
Thanks in advance for any useful advice.

ATM I'd probably go for an AMD Athlon II X4 640, and something like a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 for a motherboard. That's like the best you'll find in terms of price/performance. And get a budget GPU.
The rest is just a matter of shopping around for whatever is cheap.
For memory anything will do, just get about 4 gb of DDR3-1333. Should be fine. Get an SSD and a big HDD.
You should be able to get what you need for far less then 800 really.
Oh and as an XP user you'll probably like Windows 7 more. |

| My advice is to avoid Windows 8 like the plague. |

keep in mind if you plan on using serato SL-1, you will have issues with teh intel core i series chipsets
at least thats what happened with me and my i5 laptop
I would just avoid intel processors all together. |
