"wall of sound' a new synonym for 'overproduction'?

i just checking out the new releases sub-forum when i ran into the following post:

“Gaza” is a perfect example of the Above & Beyond coined sub genre ‘Trance 2.0’. Embossed with intricately layered and sub-fused electro basslines, “Gaza” has an ultra unique and fresh sound. Beautifully faint vocal melodies and blissed out chords fill the breakdown with a wall of sound before a tantalizing drop re-engages the rolling basslines into the fore!

This is the sound of 2013!

maybe its just me, but i think its just a wee bit too much. its as if too much stuff is going on so that everying is drowining. what does everyone think?

there is only one "wall of sound" and it is developed by one of the first geniuses of pop music as can be seen here:

And I would argue, perfected by the greatest genius pop music ever produced as can be seen here:

No one is going to confuse that ear bleeding by above and beyond for anything close to something produced by those two geniuses.

I literally can't stop laughing at that "Trance 2.0" thing. :stongue: :stongue:

Are they talking about "wall of sound", or "wall of noise". There is a difference.

Wall of sound is a deliberate production technique used for a certain effect. However, overproduction often leads to tracks being packed with so much aural they unintentionally resemble a wall of sound, even though there's no effect being gained from it.

Overcompressed, over-limited. This is getting tragicomic.
We were always thought how electronic music, and in general all the music dense of emotional content, should be dynamic, expressive and alive as much as it can be.
This here surpasses even pop music in terms of how audio has been over-processed.

The enormous ignorance of the people producing this way doesn't bothers me so much, as those who actually listen and appreciate it. I can't find any logic to this. The only explanation I could avance is they've got in their ears. A layer of that serves them as a shield to the extreme sound pressure they are submitted.

Like, even at low volume my ears were almost bleeding. If somebody can explain how it's possible to listen to this without getting headache I'd be grateful.

Just for a comparison, to hear the other part of the coin:

Alero50
lol.. He called it "gaza".

There's been a "No frequency left behind" campaign going on for a while now.

wall of noise :haha: good description.

i agree, this penchant for over production wrecked trance music, even before they started with the electro and dubby basslines and pathetic vocals.

it's too much, and for no reason. reeks of technical amibtion over a musical ear. it's covered in a sickening sheen of varnish... everything sounds the same, and it's not even a good sound to begin with. there's no individuality.

entire labels have one sound, it's like all the music from different artists came from the same producer... horrendous.

it's time to take some sandpaper out to this and get some rough round the edges back. back to the drum machines.

Since the mainstream songs are typically over-produced and are making the cash, other labels do the same in fear of being overlooked. Now there just seems to be a standard mastering package for tracks nowadays.

The music and fans are always to suffer from soul sucking corporations.

Yup wall of sound is quite accurate in it's description. Producers nowadays are just slapping on the compressors too hard and everything is all the same level in your face type of thing. I don't necessarily enjoy that sort of production technique but it can have its uses.

Yeah, maybe a bit too much. But despite I like the melody that starts at 2:29 and still sounds clear to me. Even like the last 30 seconds more...obviously.
For Gaza I think the melody is kept pretty simple otherwise it would have been a lot worse in my view.

Probably Chicane & Ferry Corsten - One Thousand Suns (Soundprank Remix) also would qualify as wall of sound, but I really love it and think they would have made it like this in the 90's if they would have been able to.
