Kotsy, I'm impressed by how still you keep your camera. |
The last dubfire one was really difficult because I didn't have my gloves on. Boy, were my fingers frozen on the way back to the car!! |

Your clips also make me contemplate how funnily people respond to sounds. It's a contemplation I've had numerous times, as I'm sure many TA members have had as well, but I find it humorous how people (including me) will start jumping up and down, bouncing around, gyrating, and making all sorts of movements in response to some sounds emanating from a set of speakers. Clips on mute and silent raves are even funnier. |
I like this observation :) |

I guess Chus and Ceballos wanted to get done with their night. |
I actually noticed c+c hung around after their set to catch the next one, probably for like an hour although I couldn't really tell how long it was. Thought that was really cool of them! Maybe Addy had to cancel...
+1 on christina cruise. i think she had a yayed out friend trying to rile people up the last time i saw her as well (boat cruise a year or two back) - probably the same broad |

February 1 & 2 marked the launch of the Brrrrr! Winter Music Festival at Echo Beach in Toronto. With temperatures that dipped as low as -15 each night, it was a chilly launch for a completely new and outrageous festival concept for a city not known to love the cold weather. Despite the frigid temperatures, close to 4000 people made their way to the edge of Lake Ontario and experienced an event that exceeded the expectations in almost every way. The site layout, décor and production were top notch and the artists all came through with solid performances garnering 9 and 10 out of 10 reviews across social media. In the end, the event was designed to emulate the wildly popular Igloofest in Montreal but was able to quickly establish its own identity and will now provide a new and exciting winter destination for the city. Thank-you Toronto!

maybe they enjoyed listening to style of music they used to play :p stefan said there was a huge grin on pablo's face when Brent dropped his first track (a remix of an old c+c track)

He was helping out at the door when I arrived and told me it didn't look like he was going to play at all when I asked him what time he was in so I'm not sure what happened. |

C&C were okay... Just okay, I'm kind of getting frustrated with these guys because with their huge reputation I expect more. Magda was the , loved her whole set. Dubfire's opening literally blew me away and I stayed right till the end for that. |
This is pretty much on par with my experience. Except IMO Chus & Ceballos were awful. Some of the most uninspired music I've heard in a while. It sounded like the same track for almost an hour of their set. They had a few decent moments, but otherwise it was just monotonous fodder.
Magda was really good, yet again. I don't think I've seen her play a bad set in the last 5 years.
Dubfire's opening hit the home run after Magda's set. However, after a while his set started to plod along with the oh so familiar generic techno/tech house sound.
I left at 10:30.
I wanted to make the afterparty, but was too tired. I heard Magda went b2b with Dubfire until the wee hours which I can't even imagine how good that was. Those two play some of the most warped and twisted music around. I'm jealous of anyone who experienced this.
Overall, it was a really fun time, and I'm glad we have something like this happening in our city. Thanks very much to the organizers and all involved. |

To further that observation, it also seems as though the physical response to sounds is culturally contextual. For example, I could not imagine my grandmother--even during her youth--responding in any way similar to the way the people at Brrrrr! did. I don't think Dubfire's music would elicit a favourable reaction from her whatsoever. What is it about the minds and bodies of those who attended Brrrrr! that makes them move that way? Is there something inherent in the sound? Is there something inherent in the individuals? Or, have all of us techno fans been culturally conditioned to think that what emanated from those speakers was worthy of bouncing around to? For me, dancing often doesn't feel like a conscious decision (aside from consciously choosing to expose myself to dance music), but rather an almost involuntary physical reaction to the music.
I'm sure few would argue against the appreciation of various forms of music being the result of conditioning. After all, it'd be tough to claim that one form of art is objectively better than another--although I would love to hear an argument for it--but I do find people's reactions fascinating. Why am I so compelled to dance to this music, and why does it feel so good? |

Chus and Ceballos aren't festival DJs and they are barely bar hours DJs. You have to get into a certain mindset when you hear them with those time constraints.
If you're comparing them to Boa/Sonic/Stereo, obviously you will be disappointed. I can only imagine how hard it would be for those guys to program an hour or two set.
And FYI: They really loved Moskito. They stayed an hour after to hang out even when they were tired from the festival and Boston the night before. |

After digital dreams, I was expecting to be disappointed at Brrrrr. They said in an interview that they aren't festival djs, but club djs and that definitely does ring true, but I still dont' get why they can't play the style they play at festivals with a healthy amount of drums sprinkled in.
I'm not surprised they loved Moskito. The club is fantastic and has proper after hours vibe to it. I absolutely love the low ceilings and dim/non-intelligent lighting (almost zone like). I was disappointed to learn they were only playing 1-3am on fb earlier in the night because I'm sure they would've played harder if they played till close (or even till 4). I would give them another chance in Toronto if they came back to play a late night set there *fingers crossed* |
