Porter Robinson & Seven Lions@Roseland review

I'm guessing not many pple if anybody on this forum went to the show but thought I'd post a review anyway for anyone interested.
I've never seen Porter Robinson before, I'm only familiar with the guy from his Language track which is great. He seems to be on fire though for a 20 yr old guy with one big hit. Roseland was crowded but not as much as I've seen it for Prydz' shows last yr. Porter Robinson's set was good but the guy played a very chopped up set. He must have played about 200 songs in 2 hours, felt like he was playing a cd sampler. His style basically makes the crowd rage hard for 30 seconds and then he stops the beat and plays something else. Just when you're getting into a song, 20 seconds in it's over, lol. After the 1st hour it just got annoying. Mat Zo, who plays and produces with Porter Robinson, seems to be doing the same thing now. He packed 70 tracks in his Essential Mix this weekend. Not bad, but made me want a set where I could dance to one track for at least 3 minutes, lol.
Otherwise, great light show and an awesome night for first party of the year for me :) |

Another case of these guys are producers not dj's. They wouldn't know how to build a proper set if it was pre-recorded for them. |

You would think playing that many tracks under an hour would require some skill (unless its all pre planned) |

I agree with that. It shows that a dj is putting work into his set and working intensely each second instead of going easy & playing one 7 minute track after the other. I like sets where you can see that some work and creativity was put into it rather than simply one track after the other. However, it crossed my mind last night at the show that it's possible his sets might be pre-recorded. His tracklists have been very similar not only for the shows of this particular tour but in general. If his sets are pre-recorded, then he's living the life! All he'd have to do is go up there and dance while he plays a 2 hour mp3 on his laptop, collecting the thousands after, lol |

They cram all those songs in one set because the new school fans attention spans are low. I notice other DJs now do the same thing....play 30 seconds to a minute of one song (the hot parts), then do it again for the duration of the set. |

I've noticed how the crowds are in these types of events that attract the pop scene people that are riding the "EDM" fad. They just stand there for the entire time until there is a big drop or whatever you wanna call it, and then they jump up and down for 30 seconds. Rinse and repeat. Seems like he's avoid the standing around doing nothing part by just playing drop after drop after drop.
It's terrible IMO, but I can see why he does it. It's what his crowd wants. They don't dance, they "rage."

Some guys pull it off pretty well... Bryan Kearney comes to mind. But overall, absolutely it's no longer about the journey, but how many top 100 tracks you can squeeze in a set. It
s stupid. |

Curious to hear how Seven Lion's set went. Im not a fan of dubstep, but kind of like his style of "trance-step (?)". |
