| quote: | To this date you have not reported one single issue or PMed me one single time. So, quite frankly, you're not part of the solution, and complaining about the moderation (and further derailing other conversations in the process) makes you part of the problem. I can't call to memory a single complaint that hasn't actually been handled and the underlying issue either removed or diffused.
The problem is that some of you seem to think that I or any other mod has time to spend analyzing every single post in a not-so-low-traffic forum. Past a certain point, that's simply not practical; other members need to actively participate in the moderation process by flagging things when they happen.
Meta discussion like this adds no value whatsoever to the forum; the trolling is actually better (albeit not by a whole lot) because it amuses a few people in the process. If you don't like what you're seeing then use one of the multiple channels already available for doing something about it, instead of bitching in-thread. |
Sorry to extend the closed thread, and I get what you're saying Digi, but there are several people on here currently who AFAIK, have not contributed a single ing useful thing to this particular forum the entire time they have been on it, yet roam free to it up for the rest of us.
I for one have brought several things to you in the past when things have got out of hand which have been dealt with, and like I said, I understand the hands off approach to a degree, but a tiny bit of oversight wouldn't go amiss.
I wish the speed at which you closed this thread would be applied to some of the god awful flame baiting troll vomits that appear on here on a daily basis.
Simply making some of these people aware (not necessarily using) that you have the almighty ban hammer I think would be enough to whip certain offenders in line, and set a tone for the forum. |

in my humble opinion - this forum has a lot of talented/experienced people but i think the general tone can be quite low atm
Its possible that a lot of good people get put off from posting stuff when they see the slagging matches/trolling - the kind that can only really happen from behind the safety of your keyboard - that can go on here

So here's an idea, and I'm hoping that those who give a will do this:
If you see a thread getting out of hand, or someone is constantly disrupting discussions or is even just a constant troller, notify diginuts.
Here's the link:
http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...ge&userid=15571
Might be an idea to bookmark it. Diginut will not and should not have to constantly monitor threads, but this is a way of bringing light to something and ever time I've ever done this, he's been happy to oblige.
It may not lead to an instant ban for those causing problems, but I think the state of moderation can be affected by those that care, in this way. |

Oh I see.
Anybody can say what they want, unless they're saying it about the moderator?
Furthermore, a moderator is a pro active role, not one that requires the largest contributors of content to this place to go running to sir every time. If you can't be arsed to moderate, then get somebody else to do it. |

I don't have a problem with criticism, I expected it from day one as a moderator, but we have a forum specifically intended for this category of discussion and this isn't the appropriate forum for it.
Anybody can say what they want as long as it's reasonably on topic and not abusive to other members. This is pretty damn clear in the forum rules and the TOS that everyone agrees to when they register. If something's not in line with those basic rules then it's grounds for closure, deletion and/or suspension, but it'll only happen if I actually know about it. I didn't close the other thread because it had about me in it, I closed it because another member alerted me to the fact that it had gone completely deranged and off-topic.
Off-topic discussion includes complaining about the moderation on the forum (or worse, in other people's threads). It's as disruptive as any other form of trolling and I will treat it as such. Go ahead and bash me all you want in the correct forum - not here.
Like RANN said, I can't be everywhere at once. Everyone obviously sees the stuff that doesn't get cleaned up, but next to it there's mountain of that does. In any event, there's a sticky thread for reporting issues, and you can also PM me. I'm sorry that this site doesn't have an anonymous flagging system, but I can't do anything about that. Those are your options.
If you have suggestions for how I can improve the forum - that is, suggestions that are actually practical and don't assume that I have endless free time - then PM me or post it in the site suggestions forum. Likewise, if you feel that you or somebody you know could be doing a better job, by all means make your case in the site suggestions forum or to Swamper directly, but if you want to be taken seriously then you might want to mention what you actually think should be done differently, in specific terms, not vague platitudes.
Now I'm sure you can all understand why I'm closing this thread. Don't add to the problem by contributing more off-topic posts and discussions. We have forums for that. |
