I think jp is asking something different tho. hes wanting to know the first trance song made as we define it today, not the first song that ever used "elements" of trance in it. cuz just using a few trance like samples doesnt necessarily make it a total trance song. theres a huge gap between '78 and '92 lol.

Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe in 1975 ...

New order - The beach (B-side of blue monday) in 1983 :-)

I'll say:

Beltram - Energy Flash
Congress - 40 Miles

..both of which have been updated for this year, in one form or another, strangely enough.

Is age of love that track with a "Come on, dance wiz me" vocal sample? There must be thousands of different Ages of Love now :D

I've heard three myself (the original, the Toni de Vit's and someone else's - not Scooter!)

Yea, I remember a TV station used that as their theme to the '98 World Cup, took me ages to track it down.

sure that wasn't basment jaxx - rendevous? :p
oakie still uses Giorgio Moroder - The Chase in his sets, so it can't be that far off ;)

One could state that jean-michel jarre was the first, but then you could also say that some synthesiser producers were as well.
I wonder when the label Trance was first used to define a style of music.

yep. i think the original came out around 1991 and was New Beat. and then midway through 1992, jam & spoon remixed it in a trance style which propelled the track out of the "underground".

but if you consider the age of love watch out for stella mix to be the first trance track, jam & spoon's Stella obviously came out before this.

there was a lot of trance on belgium's R&S label but probably a lot on germany's eye q label also, in 1992. and according to its founder, MFS Berlin claims it created the "trance" moniker:

Beltram - Energy Flash

brilliant track but i don't know if i would say it is trance. orbital's Chime which came out in 1989 is more trance than this (not that i would say chime is trance).

he (Jean Michel Jarre) did some schweet trancy stuff in the 80's as well. i gotta listen to some of that stuff again!

and in the 90s with Chronologie : ).
