Canada I'm dropping a dime on you but you've been good to me for many years...
About 2 years ago I was up in Van/BC, I've been to t.dot and montreal so I kinda already knew what to expect. I've been to head/smoke shops in toronto and I've only really seen one or two 'clinics' for heroin addicts the kinds that let you go there to do your drugs but with sterile needles etc. I was driving in BC over to an old part of chinatown to take some night pics and I noticed in the area that I parked that there was one of these heroin clinics (side street off the main strip). I didn't think anything of it, that is until I crossed over the street walking towards main, i noticed this back-alley that runs parallel to main street...
out of the mist emerges one of the craziest sites in my eyes, literally dozens on dozens of ed up heroin addicts, some squatting, others almost in a slow zombified stroll. I quickly popped out my tripod and was going to take a night shot of it when someone from the alley screamed hey don't be takin no pictures down here
i wont front, i was sketched out so I folded my up and just kept moving, but god damn..I wish I got that pic. |

| Yeah East Hastings/Downtown Eastside. Home of Insite. I actually think safe injection sites are a great thing. Until we can look at addiction holistically and offer proper support and treatment, not only for addicts, but for those at risk of addiction, the homeless, etc. - harm reduction is the best approach. There is tons of research that links harm reduction strategies with things like decreased rates of Hep C and HIV, tuberculosis (this has to do more with living conditions in shelters), reduced crime, etc. Treating addicts like criminals clearly doesn't work, and addiction is a far more complex issue than just sending someone to detox or AA. |

| One of my best friends here was a pretty regular heroin addict for a couple years about 5 or 6 years ago. He shot up daily, but he said the entire time he was addicted, he never touched a needle himself. He's from an upper-middle class family, and had a lot of money, and told me that if you're getting your stuff from a legit dealer, they'll often have a place for you to "enjoy" at their own home, and they take care of everything for you. |

i wonder if treatment centers that offer up sterile needs would help administer the drugs but mix in their own solution that counter balances / reduces the addiction. I'm just spewing from your holistic comment.
Either way, I do agree with your mentality. |

Well what do you think methadone clinics are?
Honestly, we're not gonna "cure" anyone's addiction without looking at and fixing the issues that contribute to people becoming junkies in the first place. Up to and including the criminalization of drugs/drug use/etc.
I live in a small-ish city, we have several methadone clinics, as well as a safe injection/needle exchange program. It keeps people safe and off the streets, able to function and participate in the community. Maybe not ALL of them, but it really makes a difference. |

| Suboxone. The only problem with it is that it's insanely expensive. |
