I have actually thought that, too. That Banksy is in fact a collective. I think the fact that we can speculate on such a thing is a testament to how amazingly elusive it is. As a phenomenon, of course, because you're right: judging on the merit of the piece itself is very important, which is why there are innumerable examples of better art pieces out there, but the 'artist', itself, in this case is elevated.

Here's a bit of a different view to the Banksy Collective ala Exit Through The Gift Shop (push the mr brainwash to the fore front) motif which between everyone in this thread thus far, Banksy has been completely asleep aside from his rare appearance at MOCA LA for Art in the Streets (his probably more famous work was the elephant bit off of PCH)
Banksy went to town right before MOCA LA's show Art in the streets -- there's more work around the city but this one was a bit controversial
During MOCA for "Art in the streets", I still feel like NYC's very own hit MOCA harder than Banksy...
