| same driver, different casing which is reflected in the price. The 990s have a more exaggerated bass but both are coloured. If you want neutral headphones, these are not the headphones you want. the k240s are cheaper and pretty standard. They beyer 990/880 aren't bad, they just aren't really reference headphones. I'm sure you will bet used to them either way. But the fact that you need to buy an amp ... i mean think about that cost and you could get a way better set of headphones with no external amp. |

I picked mine up from here: Headroom AMP & DAC options.
The DAC's quite nice if you're playing straight from a computer, but not really necessary if you've already got a proper stereo system being fed from a computer. Keep in mind, tho', that the DAC's useless without the AMP, at least with the Headroom Models (they've sort of customed their brands together). |

hd650 + benchmark dac1.
i never realized how much the headphone amps on my old e-mu 1820m, audio dj8, traktor audio 10 (worse than the adj8) sucked until i bought the benchmark. the benchmark can drive what ever you plug into it. i never noticed how distorted the bass was, how narrow and 2d the sound stage was w/the ni interfaces until i used the benchmark. actually, it really hit me when i went back to my ni interface. |

temporary lifestyle changes. i had to curtail a lot different things for a couple of months to be able to save up the money. it wasn't easy for me at all.
if you have the the grand, save a little more and at least get the usb version. you'll be glad you didn't spend it on escorts, or on some beat up jalopee that will probably loose all four wheels on your way to work two weeks after you buy it.
from a mixdown/production stand point, something like this would be one of the best things you can do for yourself. it's literally night and day between the dac1 and the ni interfaces i've owned. the slightest pan adjustment you hear it. a .001db notch a 4.38khz you hear it (exaggerating a little) that .02db of gain reduction is now obvious, and you'll still hear difference when you mess w/the attack/release times. that subtle ambience reverb you add some -25db to -30db under the dry signal, mute the reverb, yep you'll hear that too.
even if you just love listening to music in general and nothing more, again, this is one of the best things you can do for self. it won't make a crappy recording sound good, it's just going to show you how crappy it really is. but you will definately understand what a great recording sounds like. i can go on and on with how the first time i heard a shpongle album thru the benchmark the music was much wider, and a lot more 3d than it was w/the ni interfaces. the bass was also a lot cleaner and detailed, and not distorted like it was w/the ni interfaces. don't get me started on how i started to hear all these little minute musical parts/details that i never heard before.
i know it's a lot of money, and it's not a sexy purchase like buying a new synth, or new guitar, but it's totally worth it. i don't regret it at all. actually i'm still upset 2 years later that i didn't do it 5-10 years ago. would have saved a lot of headaches, and i would have more experience working w/real tools.
ps i bought the dac-1 pre. i could have had more fun than you w/the escorts w/ that kinda $$$. ;p |

| A $1k headphone amp is a pretty silly investment for a bedroom producer who makes no money from his hobby IMO. |

| especially the phones in question. I mean you could get top of the line akgs and you would be better off. There is something kinda silly about spending money on 880s. |

you don't see anything retarded about spending 1000$ on an amp for 200$ headphones ? I don't get the logic. And please do indicate how autism has anything to do with the topic. Half the people working in silicon valley have "Autism". |
