transferring VSTs

Hey TA,

So I got a new awesome laptop, and am looking to transfer all of my production stuff from my old laptop to my new one. I've had some frustrating complications in the past, so I want this to go as smoothly as possible. Specifically, I'm wondering which is the best way to get all of my VSTs on my new laptop. I have it all stored on an external hard drive which I wanna transfer onto the internal hard drive. Is it feasible that I can just copy and paste VSTs like Massive and Waves plug-ins, or should I play it safe and just re-download/re-install them? I appreciate it!

Unless you are doing a complete install of a backed up pre built machine i think you will find you will need to reinstall your VSTS due to reg entries, common files and other settings that cannot be copied over.

i'd say copy over your vst folder and program files for those vsts exactly, then see which ones don't work (due to registration, etc, as said) then reinstall the ones that won't load.

there are some vsts that just run off the .dll and support files, so might as well see if you can save some time by only reinstalling the ones that also require registration

windows would be pretty hard. I figured out how to spoof the machine ID, MAC addy and the hardrive ID so that I can just restore things on another computer with no installing required but that is osx.

It saves hours of work. Because things like ilok and Elicenser are tied to not just your computer but your root drive.

Aright thanks guys... I'll probably try copying over the whole VST folder and then re-installing the ones that don't work to save time. ah, I really hate the uncertainty and slippage involved in this sort of thing :(
