| One of my graphics instructors always pronounced it as "jif" He was an interesting sort. He was in his 70's yet participated in marathons and hunting safaris. I figured he was probably right in the way he pronounced it, but I preferred "gif" more. |

We don't have that brand here, I don't think. I do seem to recall a cleaning product called Jif though. |
Jif was a brand which was that well known over here that it got and still does get used to indicated a cleaning product someone uses in house (kitchen, bathroom etc.)
I already said GIF for as long as I can remember, which should be right after it got introduced by CompuServe in 1987.
JIF as cleaning product also is much older, early 70's, now called CIF over here.
Something funny at Wiki by the way: JPEG Interchange Format
| quote: | Jif or JIF can refer to:
As a brand name:
Jif (peanut butter), made by the J.M. Smucker Co.
Jif (lemon juice) sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland by Unilever
Cif, a Unilever cleaning product, branded as "Jif" in Australia and New Zealand
In computer science:
JPEG Interchange Format, the file format for the JPEG image compression standard |

Was your predilection for self-doubt thrust onto a most unsettling degree of tentativeness? |

Interesting.
Invents GIF, can't pronounce own name properly. |

Haha, I thought I remembered it! I can understand why they re-branded it as "JIF" here in Australia though. "CIF" would probably be pronounced "SIF" here, and "sif" is short slang for "as if" (which is normally used as a somewhat negative reply to things. For example - Question: "Did you see Skrillex on the weekend?" Answer: "Sif I'd ever go to a Skrillex gig, off"). |

Changing it to CIF doesn't make sense to me, not after 30-40 years when most knows it as JIF. Indeed, also here CIF is pronounced as SIF. Doesn't mean anything here, but is sounds stupid and cheap. I still call it JIF :) |
