Yamaha HS80m

I have the chance to buy a used pair of Hs80m with a Hs10w sub for 600$.
They would also throw in mogami gold cables if I buy all at the price listed above. It has been told to me that they have been owned for two years.
Any advice on these? It's the used part that is making me curious. they are in pretty good condition. The sub really seems to me like a deal breaker, but I have been wrong with these things before.

I have the exact same monitors (including the sub, which I really need because my room sucks up every drop of bass). Assuming everything works perfectly and is in good condition, that's a great deal.

There is always the question of whether or not you need the sub and there will be many people that will tell you to avoid using one, but it really depends on the acoustics in your room. Also, even if you don't use it for the majority of your mixes, the sub is useful as a final reference for checking the low frequencies.

Be aware that Hs80s (although very good) just do not work in a small or untreated space. They'd be even worse with a sub.

Thanks Cryo for that info, much appreciated! Seems to cheap to pass up seeing as though new, the set would cost over 1k

tehlord..now see, that is the concern I am having to. I have a condo. My work area is around 500 square and not treated. To be fully honest, these would be my first pair of true pro monitors. I am seriously questioning what I would get out of these. However, I have a friend who produces dub step in a apartment half the size of my work space and is not treated as well. He uses a pair of rockets and his mixes seem pretty darn good. Especially on the low end which of course is needed for that style of music.
Unfortunately, I am unable to treat my area as it is not designated solely for music. I am stuck

You can build a fair amount of non permanent room treatment yourself. Bass traps can be made out of wood and rockwool and placed on stands and wall panels can either be hung up or put on stands as well. It's really worth doing.

Oh and for the record, dubstep is literally a piece of piss to mix. It's really not hard at all.

forget about HS80 in a smaller room than 20m2 unless very good treated. also they have no midrange. just saying.

They have a ton of midrange, not to mention the ability to boost/cut the mids. They can have a lot of bass, though, depending on the room and speaker settings (they also have the option to boost/cut the bass). Like any monitoring system, if you boost the bass, the midrange will be perceived as weaker, but if you leave the bass flat or cut it, and leave the mids flat or boosted, they will have more mids than most people would ever want. Between the high cut, mid EQ, bass cut, room and level settings, there's plenty of options to make the HS80Ms work in just about any room situation.

i dont agree but thats just me. especialy vocals seemed to drown on HS80 in my house, even with bass cut. and the treble was slightly distorting even at low levels. very weird. but im used to speakers with very prominant midrange and clearity (scandinavian sound they say). its probably just taste.
