I avoid rear ported or radiator monitors like the plague, because I can't put up acoustic treatment. If you are able and planning to put up acoustic treatment, I'd second DJ RANNs recommendations.

IMO rear ported aren't that much of an issue unless you putting them right up against a wall. You only have to worry about proximity and drawback effects and they only really come in to play if you're wedging them up again a wall or your room's wall is made out of horrible materials (breeze blocks, glass, poured concrete etc) in which case very little is going to sound good in that room without treatment.
If not, on the budget end of things I'd go...

KRK RP6 G2
KRK RP6 G1 was terrible and I think G2 suffers from that stigmata undeservedly. KRK RP8s are and always have been terrible, which again impacts on perceptions of the whole line. |
Those yellow coned turds get little to no love around here, and rightly so. KRK have been eclipsed by so many other brands at each price point that they really are a just a marketing company right now. Not trying to slate anyone's choices but if anyone does what I did and goes to a few music stores to A/B them against other monitors, you'll see what I'm getting at. |

The irony is that most of the keyboard warriors that get on the KRK hate wagon have never actually listened to them and just buy their monitors online, based on someone else's opinion.
I've auditioned a lot of speakers. I did not like the entire G1 range and, as you know, I did my fair share of KRK hating. I wouldn't turn full 180 and buy a pair of G2s if they hadn't improved. RP5s and RP8s are still bad, but RP6s are not. If you're looking for front ported speakers at this price level, there are not many options and all of them are worse in my opinion. I would have to step up to A7Xs to notice an appreciable improvement, but it would be a waste of money given my typical monitoring environment.
If you can't make good music with RP6s, then it's not the speakers. I'm not afraid to be controversial and not get sucked into the hole of diminishing returns that is pro audio. :p |

It's way too easy to sucked into all the tech marketing hype and go crazy with all this gear that you never needed in the first plavce. |

Hey guys, looking to get either get a set of studio monitors or studio headphones. Havent soundproofed my room or anything like that, havent even looked into it. its important to fet done i know that. See a lot of people saying the headphones have damaged their hearing in previous years and to avoid them. But night time producing is off the cards without for me then in that case. Pros and cons with both I suppose. Any reccomendations for either? Advice welcome too guys. Helped me quite a lot so far :) |
I got a pair of krk rokit6. Just putting some stacks of printer paper underneath them removes all the vibration noise (no need for expensive vibration pads and stands). I have old studio headphones, but i got them way back and I find them to be "ok" in what they do. Studio headphones are really only good for monitoring the stereo fields and high end. But a decent set of monitors gives you good high end monitoring and any normal head phones let you monitor stereo width an an acceptable level.
In conclusion its a lot wiser to get the studio monitors and then just a normal pair of cushioned headphones for the stereo field. I switch between them and it gives me a good impression of how the song will transition to different systems. |

| Thanks for the input guys went for the AKG K 702's. Got them for £200 and being a newcomer to it all I'm going to wait a while for decent monitors. I have a set of rokit 8's for my decks but wouldn't be arsed shifting them back and forth all the time. Thanks again |

I'm just going to warn you, it will be frustrating to work on the low end. At least from my experience, but keep working at it. |
