Hi Guys.. well Im very new in the Producion Forum.. I started with FL, now im with Reason.. but I dont have I MIDI Keyborad´... but i really need to know what is what.. is MIDI Keyborad the same that MIDI COntroller??... I guess so... and i was planing to buy a MIDI Controller... so... I dont know anything about keyborads.. I really want to start trying to produce something.. so.. can u give your choices for the MIDI Keyborad.... other thing now is the money... i dont have too money... so.. I need something that do the basics and with a descent price... I hope u can help me.

Thanks in Advance, Carlos.
hey cheggy
a keybboard makes a sound, a midi controller doesn't.

Have a look at the midiman oxygen8. Its only small, i think 25 key, but it has assignable dials which is always helpful.

Iv got it, its good, but i really need one more octave of keys.
CarlosM
and.. are we talking about a midi controller or a midi Keyboard?..

I also would like to know the advantages and differences of Keyboard and midi controller please... Thanks for the help.. Later

A keyboard that you use to control (play) other instruments (like a
rackmount synth, or a sampler in Reason, via MIDI) is called a Master
Keyboard, or a Master Controller, or a Controller Keyboard... and
maybe another 3 names or so :)
Anyway, it is a Controller, because it controls other instruments.

A PhatBoy, or a Kenton Control Freak are controllers you use to
change parameter values of MIDI Continuous Controllers (MIDI cc's) on
another instrument (like the Filter Cutoff value in Reason, or for
example the Modulation amount of a rackmount sampler).

All of the above are controllers, they control other instruments.
But they also allow to control different things... it would be
difficult to control a MIDI cc with the keys of your keyboard..., a
knob or a slider is better suited for this kind of task. At the other
hand, imagine having to control your notes with a pair of knobs or
sliders... piano playing is already pretty difficult, but this would
make it impossible to play :)

So far my story about controllers...

Another small thing is the term "MIDI Keyboard". This term is just
open for different interpretations... it's either a controller, or a
keyboard that you can control via MIDI (for example play sounds from
it that are driven by MIDI messages from Cubase).

It can also be both: A number of classic keyboards just have a
fantastic playing action, have MIDI I/O, so they are both used as
sound source AND as Master Keyboard. Probably the best example of
this is the Sequential Circuits T8 (yes the same company as the
Prophet 5), which still has one of the best and most advanced full
weighted action implementations that exist.

Here are some cool articles on the subject:

Hope this helps you out a bit!

Greetz,

PS. If you have (almost) no money..., save a bit and go for a
controller like the MidiMan Oxygen8, it's only 135 Euro, it's small,
but has keys and knobs... if you're currently working with a mouse
alone, you'll never regret having bought a capable controller!
CarlosM
Thanks CoolRunning for that reply.. and the Oxygen8 makes sound??... i mean if I dont have it connected to the computer will make a sound like a normal music keyboard??

I have 150 US DOllars now.. so I guess I can buy it.
CoolRunning
Hey CarlosM,

It won't make sound on it's own, as mentioned above, it's only a
controller... But you can control softsynths etc. with it, so it's
your PC that's going to produce the sound...

Greetz,

CarlosM
OK.. thanks... but.. I want it for use it with the Reason for now.. but wich sounds supposttly will I play??... the ones of Reason??.. i think is not enought... or Should I buy sounds or download sounds for a Sound Collection??... i mean.. all the sounds like Violin, Piano, Trance Sounds.. etc...
hey cheggy
the oxygen8 will play the sounds in reason. Reason will act as the synthesiser.

There are also plenty of other software synths around which you can use it with.
Alternatively, you can buy a synth module, which is hardware and like a keyboard synth, but without the keyboard, you use the oxygen8 as the keyboard and plug it in.

If you want a keyboard that makes a sound as well as being able to control software programs and synth modules, then you need to get a keyboard synthesizer that also has midi capabilities. Most good ones will have these, but you are looking at a lot of money, and when i say a lot, I mean a lot.

Getting a midi contoller like the oxygen8 and software synthesizers is the cheapest and easiest way to start.
Just a note, the oxygen8 only has 25 keys. It is very small. You might want to look at something larger as well. It will cost more obviously but you will have more range.
