One of the pioneering albums in trance IMO.
A beautifully crafted, fluid mix of quality '99' trance...the trance that defined trance. Although considered old and 'cheese' by today's trance standards and that word 'progressive' that still can't find definition in today's mind boggling subgenre infested corporate-ized world of electronica OTAB holds up it's own as one of the biggest and best albums to date.
Disc 1 starts off with the smooth, loose grooves of Vega, withering the listener in ambient breakbeats before the real bass line kicks in to seemlessy flow into Pikes featuring a housier feel to the conventional sweeping melodies of PvD's trademark sound. Another Way comes flowing in, with it's famous strings and melody taking it to another level...figurativly and literally. The mix picks up through Travelling, the techy Avenue, and the awesome Riddle with St. Etienne's soothing voice providing a calm to a driving, fast paced journey. Together We Will Conquer settles things down a little, while Face to Face breaks some light and an uplifting melody. The Love from Above comes from nowhere with it's acid lines and driving bassline, preparing for Columbia's monster buildup accompanied with it's sharp pads and bouncy strings...most noticably a climax to this mix, and not an obvious one at that.
The mix calms down with Out There And Back's round , high sound, softening and uplifting things up a little. We Are Alive finishes things off on a high note, with euphoric, uplifting almost cheesy vocals layed above a steady, rhythmic beat.
There you have it. The only complaint I have about this album is that it doesn't fit into a specific spectrum - too uplfiting to be considered non cheesy(I'll admit...it's does have it's share of cheese here and there) yet not uplifting enough to be catalogues in the likes of Oakenfold,ATB and the rest of the epic jocks, OTAB doesn't and won't appeal to either extremes. Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it's not. But whatever the case may stand, that's ok. OTAB is a solid album, chocked with grade A trance, and certified by the legions of PvD fans worldwide. While not as fluid as GU13, or ground breaking as Tranceport, it doesn't have to be.Out There And Back lives up to it's name perfectly, and takes you just there: out there - and back.

I don't agree with this because I think a lot of trance that comes out these days is cheesier then ever; almost every remix/production by the likes of tiesto, AvB, Ferry Corsten has a high amount of "cheese" in it (vocals, overblown build-ups and synths...) Out There and Back is a nice example of how things can be done different every track is build so subtle and is uplifting without being cheesy.
And your complaint about OTaB not fitting in a specific spectrum is imo also not correct; this album is typical for PvD, it's his own unique style and the fact that you can't put it in a certain bracket is not a complaint imo.

The best review I could give is "Buy it because it's good." Sorry I can't write anything better. But really, if you like PVD or even just like quality trance, go buy it.

I bought it back in Summer 2000. Nice effort from Paul van Dyk though I prefer both Seven Ways and 45 RPM to this one.

Definitely a Must-Have

By meaning cheese, in my definition, I mean style...his style in this album is old, and that's what I mean by cheese. If your talking about raw cheese factor, then yes you are right...Corsten, Tiesto, and AvB who are undeniably at the top of the trance game right now pretty much icon-ize trance right now...cheese synths, epic buildups and huge sweeping breaks - in that aspect, you are right.
And with the categorical fitting, I am right because you said it yourself...PvD has his own style, but that's MY COMPLAINT, not yours. I love PvD's style, but with today's categorical segregation, PvD doesn't fit into any.
