hi everyone...
new to the site and I have a question (first of many lol)
im currently in the process of setting up a studio in the spare room of my house... its not that big and its a box shape style build.
I had planned to go for a pair of Mackie 824s but after seeing on here somewhere big speakers like those wouldn't be a good idea for a smallish size box room?
advise on these would be great.... and sorry if this topic has already been covered.. |

Yes, it gets asked pretty much every week on this forum. Unfortunately, the forum's search function sucks balls. Start by copying the following into Google (change the search terms if you'd like):
site:tranceaddict.com monitors small room
That should get you started and hopefully narrow down your choices and questions. |

i'm not much of an expert, but dj rann is excellent on why jbl lsr's are strong monitors for small rooms on the low-end of the budget |

do you have a budget? how serious are you? whats the size of your room? will it be sound treated? what materials are the walls. everything matters. i have a tiny studio myself about 2,5*3,5m2, and i have best result with really small monitors like genelec 8020. but they dont play loud or deep so for many those would be too limited. |

thanks for the reply folks :)
well I really like the Mackie 824mk2s as I think they sound fantastic...and I was willing to get a pair...and acoustically treat the room accordingly....
I have always used headphones in the past but I have decided that a proper purpose studio would help a lot...
im not sure on the actuall room dimensions as of |

1, Did you do the search cryo told you too?
Why? because you will not find a single mention of the 824's anywhere in a thread as a recommendation that is from the last 4 years, let alone for a small room.
They used to be decent (and still are) but things have certainly moved on and you'll find at least 3 or 4 monitors that are now better for the same, if not less money.
You like the sound of the mackies because they sound "nice" and have a deceptively huge stereo image - they are not flat which is actually what you need for producing in terms of studio monitoring.
Don't get me wrong, you can certainly produce on 824's in a good size treated room as long as you know to compensate for that big scoop at 250hz, the mud in the lower mid, and the giant stereo spread.
IMO, small room = JBL LSR 2325p. Behave like a 8" in terms of bass response but only have a 5.5" cone and there don't suffer from being used in a small space. Great detail, pretty much flat and all this for $400. |
