I know a fair bit about techno through artist albums and singles, but I'm looking to expand my library of techno DJing. I'm looking for classic techno mix compilations or recorded mixes - the ones every techno fan should own, the equivalents to our Northern Exposures and Global Undergrounds, or our most hallowed Essential Mixes.
Nothing from 2005 or newer please - I know the score from then onwards. And a line or flowery paragraph justifying your selection would be much appreciated. I'll be out of the country for a week, but when I return I will be splashing on a big music shop as a birthday present to myself, and the lucky winners from this thread will be part of that.
just the ticket. check 'em both, but the picotto mix is legendary in these circles, put away any preconceptions...
it's a very narrow period, when he matured his techno sound, but before he went boring minimal. a very impressive - and very interesting mix, from start to finish. a true rough diamond... may be hard to track down though. there's a whole section that has the feel of a storm-beaten oil rig, it just builds and builds - genius sequencing.

I don't like a lot of 90's and early 2000's techno mixes because there's usually an awful lot of percussive filler junk. This Hood set from '96 is an exception, exactly the style of killer 90's minimalist modulation techno that I like.
For a Beechwood compilation, this one's surprisingly mint. A few obvious tracks, but one can web their way out from those names to discover more.
There aren't many seminal techno mixes from the '90s, as there wasn't quite the same market for it as there was for house and progressive trance. Most mixes were something like this Richie Hawtin one on Moonshine or whatever the X-Mix series from Studio !K7 were putting out. It probably wasn't until Hawtin's Decks, EFX, & 909 that folks realized the potential techno mixes could have on the market (not that he was the first to do it, mind, just the most important person to do it).

If you're feeling particularly crazy. Sven also drops some good old trance near the end.
