mixing is a bit ropey in areas but the track selection makes up for it :) good tunes bud !!

Mixing chiptunes is ing impossible unless you make them yourself.

And yeah, you've been saying you'll make an 8-bit mix for years, I'd be happy if you made any mix considering you haven't released anything in ages!

Thanks for listening, dick. :p
KilldaDJ

I once tried playing Banjo-Kazooie while stoned, it was the hardest thing I've ever done.

Bump for chiptunez.

If you think that's hard, try playing Goonies 2 stoned. Even The Official Nintendo Player's Guide won't help you at that point :P

Great mix though, Nick. Love me some chiptunes! You need to come up here for Blipfest one year!

I used to love Goonies 2. But I could only get past the first level. I loved hitting people with the yo-yo :p

Thanks for listening, Luke! Where is Blipfest and when is it?

I've listened to this mix a couple of times; I enjoyed it but, sadly, I think the earlier two mixes still have it beat.

As with Meat, the main reason for me is probably that the style seems to be a little bit different to your previous two. They were fairly conventional (well, about as conventional as chippytunes can get), with strong, obvious melodies and relatively little of your trademark glitchy/avant-garde stuff. In fact, you could easily have placed most of the tunes from your first mixes into a NES or Gameboy game and they would have fit perfectly, and that was the main draw for me.

Master Quest, on the other hand, seems to want to provoke thought and I get the impression the artists took themselves quite seriously with a few of these tracks - less of a sense of fun that many tracks seem to emanate, and more of a statement to say 'see, 8-bit can do tunes with as much depth as any modern stuff'. Maybe that's what you were hooking on to, but for me it doesn't sit quite so comfortably, I'm afraid. That's not to say it didn't bring one or two tears of nostalgia to these square eyes; the second track made Transport Tycoon pop into my head, and the third reminded me of MiG-29 on the NES (not a famous one). There were gems in there, but I had to look for them.
That being said, I didn't like Arcade Fantasy as much as Game Theory until I had given it a few spins and let it settle in a bit, so maybe it will be the same with Master Quest. Surely it will find it's way onto my playlist again :) Thanks for the mix!

Thanks for the review! I see what you're saying about the crossover between modern electronic music and 8-bit styles, which is especially prevalent with the Brandon Walsh track. It's basically trance with chiptune melodies. Honestly, my favorite part of the mix is really the first 5 tracks anyway, so I can understand not really finding anything that hooks you in like Arcade Fantasy did. However, I do see a lot of similarities to Arcade Fantasy in that the styles that appear in Arcade Fantasy reappear in Master Quest, but with more emphasis on the faster, energetic tracks. I spent a long time digging for this stuff, and honestly, 99% of the tracks that I listened to weren't good enough quality to be included either. Maybe chiptune artists these days are running out of ideas. Unfortunately, guys like Sabrepulse, Bit-Head, and others from earlier mixes seem to have stopped producing. :(

I always give my best effort on these mixes, and the quality is usually limited to the music I have available. I'll keep trying my best and hopefully my next one will be better than the last! Thanks for the support :)

Also, I don't think Meat has ever listened to chiptunes in a mix before (he hasn't heard the other two mixes of mine) and he really only likes Eurodance anyways. :p

Well, it was in NYC around December, but I just read the Wikipedia and found out that Blipfest 2012 in Tokyo was the last one :(

Bumping this one more time. Got a new mix coming in a few weeks!
