U hav to DJ in a club. If you are for example a resident at ur local club then u'll get sent promo's. Some places like the Platipus label let u pay like £100 and u get sent platipus promo's for a year or summing. Not really worth it.

the platipus web site has got info and the cost, so check it out.

£100 is a lot but hell if u have the cash u may as well spend it.

Oh yeah, no matter where u look for promo lists, it will cost u a lot. the platipus is prob one of the cheaper 1s.

how long do u get the LP before it will be fully realeased in the shops?
Acid Circus
You get them about 1-2 months before they are released in the shops. They are extremely hard to get into these days, you can't just be a DJ in any old club, you have to be in a position to promote the new tunes to as wide an audience as possible. Thus radio slots are becoming increasingly important in determining who gets on a list and who doesn't.

1: You can lie, cos most of the time, u can just say a small local club in your town, and they won't usually check.
2: u can pay company's like Promo Only a sum of money. The amount u pay depends on how long u want to remain on their list. However, they only distribute certain tunes (usually the better ones), out of all the promos that are floating around at the time.

Promo release dates depend on the LAbel thats releasing them. Some of my friends have promos of tunes that , in the end, never got realeased. Or ran into complications. I.e Riva - Stringer, was floating around music land for something like 18 months, due to label incompetence before it got signed to "whichever label it was <- I forget :p)

Labels will send select DJ's copy's of tunes that they will play a few times to arouse attention. This may vary from 24 to 16 Weeks before a vague release date. After that, when the tune is beginning to surface amongst the public, B List DJ's will get the tunes, and then about 4-8 weeks before the realease date, every other DJ will get them.

And what Acid Circus said as well :)

thats what i did. it worked fien with the perfcto mailing list, but positiva wanted written letters from the club. and how hard was it to make a letterhead and do a bit of babbling bull. i now get my cd promo's around 1-3 months in advance. i had the cd promo of janerio a full 12 weeks before it came out, which was nice. (that was down to delayed release though :)
