im in this same situation.
i play at a club that draws a real commericial crowd.
so think about it this w ay
the only way u are gonna keep them there..and dancing..is
when your would play a trance anthem..like at a normal party..replace it with a commerical track..
you cant break someone into this type of music..they will just think it is techno. so you have to bend them into it.
so suck it up...drop some commericial tracks
do what you gotta do to make them dance.. |

Unfortunately, u will have to definately start with some commercial stuff that people have heard AND is vaguely related to trance.
Like some people have suggested, u can then play some tunes that are really good and very trancey.
You'll need a few tunes like this
PPK - Ressurection
DeeDee - Forever
Ian Van DAhl - Will I, Castles in the Sky
LAsgo - Alone etc
Fragma - Toca's Miracle
For the next stage of tunes
Lange - Drifting Away
Lost Witness - Red Sun Rising (Lange Remix)
Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiesto Mix)
Alice DJ - Better Off Alone (Signum mix)
Darude - Sandstorm
Vincent De Moor - Fly Away
Dreamcatcher - I don't wanna lose my way
Matt Darey - Beautiful
And Finally, only the best now, as they should (hopefully!) be going nuts!
Gouryella - Ligaya
Marco V - I Feel You (PvD remix)
DJ Tiesto - In My Memory (Gabriel and Dresden remix)
Way Out West - Mindcircus
DUmonde - Trauma
Nu NRG - Dreamland
etc
This is in no way in any particular order! :p
Try and stick to tunes with emphasis on Melody and upliftingness. I'd steer clear from stuff like Flight 643, Obsession, Sasha stuff etc, as they'd lose interest.
And one more thing
GOOD LUCK
:toocool: :toocool: :D :D :) :tongue2 |

if they asked for trance then give them trance, no point in using cheese and comercial sheet, it will only give them a wrong idea about trance  |

I agree with the comments that say just go with good stuff, people who aren't into Trance aren't going to be immediately swayed by "cheese" any more than they're going to be bowled over by uplifting.
Regardless of what you spin some people are going to "get it" and some people are going to think the stuff is boring, everyone has different tastes, so why bother trying to "convert" people who aren't interested?
I'd spin a variety of newer stuff that you like, and some old classics like Carte Blanche or Greece 2000.
Possible opening track that I've always liked is bt - Remember (Sasha's Remix)...excellent build all the way through, a perfect way to get things going IMHO. |

It's actually nice, the more I think about it, the more of a luxary it seems to make a mix for non-Trance fiends.
Sure, you've got the issue of some people just flat out not being interested, but you also have the freedom to pull out all your favourites without having people bitch because the track is "overplayed" (in the case of stuff like Southern Sun) or "too old" (for classics like I mentioned above)
I mean, if you wanted to you could easily put together a set full of the most classic Trance tracks ever, and no one would even know the difference.
As I said above though, I really think you should just go with whatever you feel like spinning at the time, I used to DJ on an overnight radio show in Kalamazoo, which as anyone who's lived there knows, isn't exactly a Trance mecca...I didn't play anything that I consider "overly cheesy" and people would still call in all the time asking about track x or y; I had a *ton* of people interested in Marc La Cruz's Future Prison, and my friend Chris would field calls whenever he dropped Saltwater during his afternoon shift.
I think it's a mistake to assume that people can't immediately dig on the "real stuff", many non-Trance fans just aren't fans because they've never made an effort to really listen to what's out there, especially outside of Europe. I guess I just don't see where Ian van Dahl is going to do anything other than convince people that "Trance" is essentially "Euro Dance" and such. If they asked for Trance, I say give it to em... |

i agree, just try to ease them into it with harry potter trance like darude and such....I know of a club up in sacramento that has a DJ in your shoes. he just spins darude every once in a while and alice dj, people like those, then later on in the night he spins the real stuff.
Good luck! |

After 5 days, I finally made up my mind. I'll actually mix two CD's. The first one will be for sober people, girls and newbies in general. I'll play it in the beginning of the party and after it, I'll probably give it to one of my mates, whose birthday was yesterday, and he's like a brother for me (shame on me, I didn't know it was his birthday and didn't get him anything :p).
Here's the list of the "10 choons 4 noobs" CD:
1)Iio - Rapture (Riva mix)
2)Lustral - Everytime (Way Out West Sunrise mix)
3)Solar Stone - Seven Cities (Armin Van Buuren mix)
4)Lasgo - Something (Mirco de Govia mix)
5)Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiësto mix)
6)Gouryella - Ligaya
7)Kosheen - Catch (hiver and hammer mix)
8) Ayumi Hamasaki - Unite (Airwave mix)
9) DJ Tiësto - Urban Train
10) Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar (Marco V mix)
Bonus track:
11) Marcus Lira - Farewell (that's me :toothless)
What do you guys think of it?
Well, the other CD is not much of a problem: I'll play it in the end of the party when most people will probably be drunk. I'll just mix my favourites trance and nu-nrg tunes and (if nobody asks for it) I'll keep the CD with me (the last time I mixed myself a CD - and kept it - was January 2001. I gave away all the others to people that liked them :))
Shame on me, I'm addicted myself and now I'm getting more people addicted as well :p
Besides, virgin CD's cost 0.33 U$ here  |
