Rearranging aux tracks in Logic
View this Thread in Original format

Hey Logic users, after trying to drag aux tracks around the mixer window to rearrange them using every combination of modifier available, I finally realized that for some stupid reason or another the only way to re-order them is to make them visible in the arrange window and do it there. OK, great, that worked and was only a mild and unnecessary PITA, but now I'm stuck with 20+ aux buses in my arrange window. Is there a way to hide them from the arrange window without deleting them from the mixer?
meriter
true you can't rearrange them in the mixer window. What I ended up doing was sitting down and thinking of every send I could ever possibly need, and listed them all in a word document and put them in order there. So like 3 delays, 3 verbs ect ect things you will use all the time.. and then half a dozen miscellaneous ones. Then just create a batch of aux sends in logic and go down the list naming them so they are in order. Save as your project template... I think that's probably the best way

edit: you'd only ever want an aux visible in the arrange window if you're automating something on it, i'd think
cryophonik
Yeah, that's more or less the way I did it for Logic, and basically the same way I do it in Pro Tools. I have about a dozen different templates set up (tracking, projects with different multi-output drum plugins inserted and routed to individual tracks returns, etc.). And, I have several dozen buses already named and ready to go, just the way you mentioned. Still, you expect a DAW like Logic to have the ability to move aux buses around in the mixer.

Use the hide button on the track, then use the global hide button...

Tried that, but the order of aux busses in the mixer reverts back to the old unwanted order after I hide/global hide them.

This is actually a shortcoming of Logic.

There's two ways of doing it. The first is making a custom mixer environment layer, but since I hate the environment with a passion, I won't go in to that.

The easiest way is:

You can create Tracks for auxes in the Arrange window, arrange them where you want them there and then make sure you select the Arrange tab in the Mixer window. The Mixer order will mirror the Arrange order.

If you have the view set to all it will not reflect your arrange window setup.

I'm finding quirks too, although I haven't delved deeply enough yet to find out about aux ordering issues.

The fact that I can't simply drag to re-arrange the order of inserts is mildly annoying.

Option[Alt]-drag will swap the order of plugin inserts.

@RANN, nope that doesn't work either, the tracks in the mixer end up in the original order. That's OK, I made my own workaround based on how I do it in PT.

While I'm bitching about Logic's quirks, though, I've gotta say that it has the stupidest f'ing implementation of track folders I have ever seen. Somebody over there needs to get their hands on Sonar, Cubase, or Studio One and see how track folders should work. After you put tracks into a folder, viewing/hiding them should be much simpler and it is f'ing ridiculous that the original tracks are sitting there, useless and empty, after you pack the regions into a folder. I thought it was just me at first, but I didn't need to look far to see how many other people think it's dumb as well. The whole reason to put your tracks into folders is for better organization and hiding things that you don't want/need to see. Leaving a bunch of empty tracks in the view in addition to the newly added folders defeats the purpose. Dumb.

Huh... never used folders in logic before but I just watched a video and yeah that's pretty stupid.

EDIT: you know whats even worse than that, Logic murdered my whole family. I really hope they fix that with the next update

...assuming that there will be a next version.

Naw, I know I sound like I'm bitching, but overall I actually like Logic a lot. But, damn, the way that a few of these features are implemented just give me a giant facepalm.
meriter
At least you didn't start with logic 8 which stacked all third party plugins onto a single core for processing, they seemed to have fixed that in 9 but holy that was ridiculous

One major issue I have is there's no midi communication between audio units in logic, which isn't even due to the AU architecture, it's just logic. Would love to use cableguys midishaper but it's just so impractical to set up with the IAC busses and bull.. aint nobody got time for that

A 'generate automation curve' or something would be nice too but I can live without that. I have high hopes for logic 10. Everyone seems to hate the environment window but honestly it's not so bad once you wrap your head around it and it's extremely powerful

EDIT: where the hell is L4C?
