Is anyone familiar with the Direct Cable Connection between 2x pc using a parallel cable???

My problem is:

I have a laptop for work with windows 2000 (HOST) and a desktop at home with windows 98 (GUEST).

Once the connection is enabled between the pc's and it prompts me for the computer name of the host pc name which i fill out correctly.

It then says connection to host failed!

can anyone help me out here?

Cheers....

hmmmm... i havent done a direct connection with parallel connection. do you have network cards in BOTH computers? if so, you can spend 8$US and get a cross-over cable and plug it into both network cards, and BOOM, instant network. im sorry i cant help you with the parallel connection. plus, parallel connections are 10x slower than ethernet. just a thought!

i have an ethernet card in my work pc and i have a crossover cable, if i bought a lan card for my home pc would i be able to connect them together? and how do you do this???

Right, I tried this a last night and it still didn't work!

this is what is happening:

* the connection between the 2x pc's is happening, in the system tray of my work pc (host) which is win 2000, I have a network icon and it says 'unauthorised user' but a connection is enabled....

* Once a connection is enabled I get a prompt for 'Host Computer Name' which i fill out correctly. It then says ' Cannot find the host computer'??????????????????????

Somebody?????????????????????

maybe u shud consider a USB to USB kit. i mean there only cheap, and i dont think it involves a lot of setting up. Maybe look into it? go to ur local pc shop and ask about them.

Sounds like a 2000 security issue to me. 2000 is pretty much closed off to everything so you dont get hacked and such. Iv only done this kind of connection on a 98 machine with no security and it works fine. Try using the 98 machine as a the host and see if you can get it to work. There is most likely a setting you have to mess with in 2000 to get it to work correctly, and the damn things are never easy to find =-P. Ill look around and see what i can come up with but like i said try the 98 machine as the host first.
