that mix could have more air.

how do you tackle these types of advice that are sort of ambiguous and difficult for new producers to put to practical use when others critique their mix? another one is “this could be punchier” or “this could have more attitude”

punch would be moar 80/120hz area and sidechain the kick harder so it stands out more, probably a bit longer decay kick too

more air often is just high pass more aggresive on all instruments except kick and sub bass this clears out the mudd in the mid lows, automatically increasing presence, but supporting punch too, by no means it means, brighter ozone presets, additive EQ or phasey "stereo wideners" these kill focus and pinpointing

more air: better mixed hihats and sidechaining of them and maybe some slight reverb and panning. this is where the true energy lies imo, making a track sound good. edm today suck at it due to overcompression. maybe you could just lower your master with 5-10dB to gain air. older productions are very much better at this.

punch would be the kick. raise it, eq it better, compress it (or not), or change it completely.

attitude must be distortion. acid.

punchy for me means transients, like a punchy kick should stick out but still appear rounded
same with bass, envelopes are key here

air to me means like 10kHz upwards - i usually have a UAD Pultec on the master, set to 16kHz, q set to mid way between sharp and broad
that way you can boost a fair bit and it doesnt sound harsh - the top end has brightened up buts its not fatiguing to the ear - thats air to me

Low passing ftw

Let that which has air, breath.

Oh snap.

punch for me is in the 250 - 1000 range.

lower than 100 , i don't really get the feeling of punch. It just gives you that ooomph. Usually a boost in the low mids and a boost in the 1-4k range will give you that added punch / attack.

punch to me denotes a transient. Something that has attack. And that is usually in the low mids and low highs.
