Teaching the first class ever for some freshmen tonight - ideas?

The COR is obviously a terrible place to turn to for advice, so I just had to do this: If you had the opportunity to teach the first class ever for university students - and it's a key discipline, no less - what would you do to make an impact?

Go!

Edit: Here's some more info...

  • I'm the teacher (yes, I know, what were they thinking?);
  • This is the first or second university class this students are having in their life. If it's the second, they had their first class just a couple of hours before mine;
  • It's Japanese Linguistics 101;
  • Non-serious ideas preferred.

What's a key discipline?

i think a vital part of educating our youth is to engage them. The worst is to have a student who doesn't say anything, doesn't participate, and is often felt left out.

I would break the ice by starting with an introduction to a topic that they could assimilate with, a topic that has a relative association to what you trying to teach them (engineering class talk about how you are working on your own car and what you want to do to fix/build/etc).

Most students, outside of being shy, find it intimidating to participate infront of large groups/classes in fear of being right or wrong, open dialog is what spurs creative thinking so building an environment around collaboration is probably a good approach.

It's the most important subject of the semester.

And what subject would that be?

Need a bit more info here :p

Something like Japanese Linguistics 101 :p

Ps.: Non-serious ideas are mostly welcome. I used to give lectures on teaching methodology, so I'm looking forward to hearing things no sane expert would ever say!

This is the best I've got so far:

Because I still look like a student (people reckon I'm 25), I'm going to sit among them and two minutes into the class, I'm going to ask my unsuspecting "classmates" if they know when the professor will show up. Then I'll start complaining he should be there already, and bond with the students, telling them we should probably do it ourselves and study no matter what anyone tells us. Then I'll get up and say, "You know what!? I'm going to do it, now!" and hand them the syllabus and frequency sheet so they know I'm actually the one in charge of the subject.

Thoughts?

Haha, I love it when students text in class. They try to hide their phones and everything so, from my perspective, they suddenly start looking at their groins and smile. It's a bit hilarious, really.

People should smile at their crotch more often.
