What is Trance?

I've been getting into so called trance music recently but I can't really put my finger on what trance actually is. From my point of view, trance seems like the more relaxing of all of the EDM's but then I hear some other songs which are classed as trance but sound like house. Pretty confused as to what it actually is.
p.s. I'm really no expert in EDM so don't bite my head off, please. |

Trance is the most emotional genre. It can make you cry, make you shout, make you cheer, and make you celebrate absolutely nothing of substance except pure, ecstatic bliss. This is interesting, when at one time it was very repetitive and hypnotic (hence its label 'trance') and was very easy to get lost in whilst divulging in aforementioned emotions. But now it's quite difficult to get entranced due mostly to the fact that the genre has devolved into such trite, derivative junk that even the biggest culprits of it are having trouble lying about how interesting it is. If you ignore the cliched, breakdown-build-anthem template side of the genre that is so canned and predictable you can set your watch to it, trance is still pretty fun. Unless you're trying to be a Sasha worshipping pretentious snob not partaking in that, in which case you don't even want to admit you're listening to trance anymore.

I understand what you are saying but isn't that the same with all music but for different individuals? |

trance music is music meant to put you into a trance together with other people in trance, and in a such setting being able to help you to forget yourself and whatever problems you might have in life - you are now just a piece of a group of people showing each other peace, love, unity and respect through endless dancing. its musical key properties would be that it is rhythmic, repeatable, moody, driving, pumping, energetic and often building up to some sort of climax of ecstasy. but its not just about the music, its a about a state of mind and to feel part of something bigger together with similar minded people. then you wake up on monday morning with complete angst. |

To me trance is just synthesizer music with a disco beat. Vocals can be added. You can blame J.M.J., Jan Hammer, Vangelis and Axel F for this.
For the other stuff take drugs or a lot of alcohol. |
