They pay as little as they can get away with, for the most part.
Typically they try to buy things at 40% market value. With strong negotiation, and if the item being sold to the pawn shop is a high-demand item, the seller can get up to 60% value. |

I buy camera/music equipment quite often from pawn shops, and then re-sell them. My best camera, and one of my lenses was bought from one, because the staff didn't actually realise what they were selling. Win.
Generally, they have a bit of room to move on the price. Not heaps, but it depends on how good your negotiating skills are. They'll never tell you what they got it for. They're not stupid :p
Over here in AU, pawn shops give loans on stuff (at maybe 50% of its second-hand value) for a 3 month period, and you have to pay back a third of the loan each month, plus like 30% interest per month, which is insane. As a result, lots of people can't keep up with the loan repayments, and so the pawn shop now owns their , after paying a tiny amount for it.
The down side of buying from pawn shops is that people take their busted in to sell. Stuff that they can't sell on ebay because of buyer protection/paypal/whatever (especially tech stuff with "minor" issues) knowing that the pawn shop employee they talk to won't properly be able to test the item out to see any if there are any issues. I have had to return quite a few things (and thankfully the law in AU says that I have the right to return things, even second hand, if they're ed). Check your rights, wherever you live, or at the least, check the pawn shop's policy on returns. Some of them are shady as . |

Pawn brokers are worse than used car dealers (no offence to anyone here, who is one). :stongue:
They'll try to swindle out of a lot of cash, markup the price through the stratosphere, unless they're not very fluent of the item(s), or its value. So, it's wise to do your own research with the equipment on price, and street value.
Good luck! |

It doesn't matter how much they paid, they are going to charge more than its true value in hopes someone like you will over pay. Pawnshops are one step up from buying stolen goods out of the back of a van. |

The chains pay1/4 of what they can sell it for. It is easy to find the value these days. So figure that out, assume they paid 1/4 and work something out.
If it is a mom and pop shop, well I know a kid who had a 20 000 trumpet stolen. They caught the guy selling it for 50. He paid 15. They Generally pay as much as one would have to pay to score drugs. |
